Akagi was laid down on August 28, 1917as the 5th ship of the 8-8 fleet (2nd sister ship of Amagi class). Japan signed Washington Naval Treaty on February, 1922. This treaty works conversion of two battleship into aircraft carriers of up to 33,000 tons displacement. IJN has decided that the incomplete hulls of Amagi and Akagi were converted to an aircraft carrier to follow this treaty. Then carrier Akagi was completed on March 25, 1927. Japan had an experience of the building for only light carrier Shoho. The building of Akagi had a lot of difficulty due to the size as four times bigger than Shoho.

The three-level flight deck was the most conspicuous characteristic of Akagi. The vessel´s bridge was originally located just under the forward edge of the top flight deck between the top and the middle level flight decks. This arrangement resulted that the middle level flight deck was closed off and only the top and lower level decks were workable. The concept of this three-level flight deck came from HMS Furious which had two flight decks as their reference. As a result of its first major refitting, Akagi was given a small temporary island on the starboard forward end of the upper flight deck affording a good view of flight operations. As part of its second and major refitting, the flight deck was converted to a full-length single level design and more substantial island bridge was installed, relocated from the starboard to the port side of the flight deck, shifted farther aft of the original location to put it closer to the center point of the carrier´s length. After this major refitting, Akagi became a first class strategic aircraft carrier with much larger displacement: 36500 tons and flank speed: more than 30 kts. Akagi admitted to 1st carrier division after this refitting.

December 8, 1941 Akagi launched flagship for the striking force for the attack on Pearl Harbor. Akagi launched two waves of planes and gave great damage to the American fleet anchored in the harbor. The Akagi operated in the Indian Ocean on April 1942 and resulted that British cruiser x 2, carrier x 1, and destroyer x 1 were sank.

June 4, 1942, Akagi operated in Midway (Operation MI) and was attacked by U.S. dive bombers. Two bombs were hit among the armed and fueled planes with her hanger deck with a large fire flames. The Akagi was disposed by a torpedo from the four I.J.N. destroyers, and then sank on June 5 at 2:00 am.
