In his satirical paintings, Mauro C. Martinez depicts the iconography of contemporary digital culture—memes, censorship warnings, and Instagram tags—through the lens of representational painting, simultaneously documenting and mocking our relationship with internet imagery. Martinez studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California, and his work has been presented in group and solo exhibitions in the United States and the United Kingdom. In his paintings, Martinez turns the meme on its head, using its flippant style of social critique to highlight our society’s insatiable appetite for the sort of pithy viral images that make memes so irresistible. Martinez lets the visual requirements of his source images dictate his materials and techniques; he uses an airbrush to achieve the blurred effect of his “Sensitive Content” series, while the crisp lettering of his text-based works requires the precision of silkscreen printing.
