The history of mail and postage stamps of Mali describes the development of postal service in Mali, a landlocked state in West Africa (former French colony of French Sudan), bordered by Algeria in the north, Niger in the east, Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire in south, Guinea in the southwest, and Senegal and Mauritania in the west, with Bamako as its capital.
The Republic of Mali is a member of the Universal Postal Union (UPU; since 1961), and its postal operator is La Poste du Mali (La poste du Mali, established by law No. 2017016 of June 12, 2017), formerly Office national des posts[1].

Postal development
The first post offices in what is now Mali were opened by Senegal in 1890[2]. In 1892, the Senegalese post offices were taken over by the French Sudan[2].
The Republic of Mali was established in September 1960 and occupies roughly the same territory as the former French Sudan. It replaced the previous, short-lived Federation of Mali between French Sudan and Senegal.
Issues of postage stamps
Before 1959
French Sudan
From 1894 to 1902, general issues of French colonies (types Alpheus Dubois and Group) with the name of the colony were in circulation in the colony of French Sudan. Mali's first postage stamp was issued in 1894[3]. It was an overprint on the postage stamps of the French colonies: "Soudan Français" ("French Sudan")[3].
Senegambia and Niger
Main article: Postal history and postage stamps of Senegambia and Niger
In 1903, the inscription fr. "Sénégambie et Niger" ("Senegambia and Niger") is the new name of the colony.[4]
Upper Senegal and Niger
Main article: Postal history and postage stamps of Upper Senegal and Niger
In 1906, new postage stamps were issued with the inscription fr. "Haut-Sénégal-Niger" ("Upper Senegal and Niger") denoting the new colony formed in 1904, with various illustrations including colonial figures: General Louis Federbe and Governor-General Noel Balle in 1906 and a Tuareg horseman in 1914 year.[5] All of the above stamps of this colony, with subsequent names, are rare on letters before 1920.
The postage stamps of Upper Senegal-Niger were in circulation from 1904 to 1921[3].
French Sudan, Upper Volta, Niger
In 1920, Upper Senegal and Niger became French Sudan, and some of the regions became Upper Volta and Niger.[6] Postage stamps featuring the Tuareg horseman were widely used in these three colonies until the late 1920s. From 1931 to 1944, the themes were the 1931 Colonial Exhibition, Pierre and Marie Curie, the traveler René Caillier, or the Bastille Anniversary. But the most common theme was the releases of 1931. They include a Fulani milkmaid, the door to the Djenne residence, and a boatman on the Niger River.[7]
From 1944 to 1959, French West Africa issues were used in French Sudan, inscribed fr. "Afrique Occidentale Française" ("French West Africa")[3].
Federation of Mali
The first postage stamps with the name of Mali were issued by the Federation of Mali and were dedicated to the creation of the Federation, they entered circulation on November 7, 1959.[8][9] The inscription on the postage stamps of the Federation: fr. "Fédération du Mali" ("Federation of Mali") and "Postes" ("Post")[3].
In 1959 and early 1960, nine stamps were issued on behalf of the short-lived Federation of Mali, which included Senegal and French Sudan. They featured the symbols of the Federation on a series of postage stamps depicting fish, and also appeared in a general issue along with some other former French colonies in Africa.
But tensions quickly arose between the two states of the new federation, after which Senegal withdrew from the Federation, while the former French Sudan retained the name Mali, and also continued to use the postage stamps of the Federation.
The postage stamps of the collapsed federation are rarely found on letters, especially since in 1961 the remaining stocks of stamps were overprinted "Republic of Mali".
Republic of Mali
The first postage stamps of the Republic of Mali were issued in September 1960.[8][2] They entered circulation in December 1960 and January 1961 and were an overprint of the name of the republic: fr. "République du Mali" ("Republic of Mali") on the postage stamps of the Federation of Mali[10].
In 1961, the first commemorative stamp and postal block of Mali were issued.
The first two definitive issues of the young state were stamps dedicated to the presidents
