No love was lost between followers of Asclepius and Christians in the first centuries A.D. Aelius Aristides, devotee of Asclepius, his "savior and guide," and resident of Smyrna in the days of Polycarp, referred to Christians as "those impious men of Palestine" (Or. 3.671). Later, Bishop Athanasius (Inc. 49) countered that Asclepius merely healed people, while Christ healed those whom he had formed.
Wells traces out the meaning of four terms for healing common to both cults: hygiaino (and hygies), iaomai, sozo, and therapeu. After a brief review of healing in Homer, she analyzes literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence from four representative asclepieia-those of Epidauros, Athens, Kos, and Pergamon. Then follows a brief foray into the LXX, Philo, and Josephus, with a discussion of healing language in the NT, the lion's share of it being in the Synoptic Gospels and Acts. W. buttresses her argument with rich appendixes of source materials.
