Marianne Ruuth, an active member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for 49 years, died in Los Angeles June 2 following a lengthy Illness. She was 76.
Born in Sweden, Ruuth left home at the age of 14 and became a member of the Royal Theater of Stockholm. After becoming a journalist, her newspaper sent her to Los Angeles for a one-year assignment and she decided to live in the United States permanently.
She wrote articles, profiles, features and short stories for Swedish magazines and France’s Le Figaro newspaper.
Ruuth also published novels and celebrity biographies including bios on Stevie Wonder, Eddie Murphy, the Supremes, Nat King Cole, Bill Cosby, Sarah Vaughan and Oprah Winfrey. She also translated Swedish books into English including “Images (My Life In Pictures)” by Ingmar Bergman.
She served as president of the HFPA from 1980 to 1982 and oversaw media relations for the organization for 12 years.
For the past 11 years, she was responsible for the reminders list and Golden Globe program book.
She was awarded the Publicists Guild’s International Media Award and Sweden’s Bonnier Literary Short Story Prize.
