A French candlestick known as a Rat de cave, or cellar rat was used throughout France in wine cellars lighting the room and checking the fermenting gases which could be dangerous if the flame was extinguished. It consists of a turned fruitwood base and spiral iron shaft which has an internal stump which can be lowered or otherwise, to control the height of the flame as the wick burns down. The handle or rats tail is ideal for carrying the light also to hang it on the edge of an oak barrel
