The ERC Starting Grant Project POLDEI is now accepting applications for a new position.
The POLDEI project
Political deification—i.e., the transformation into and treatment of political leaders as divine beings—occurs in various religious and national contexts in Asia and is understood as instances of messianism, custodianship, sacred kingship, martyrdom, pacification, and charismatic authority, among others. The project will develop a theory of political deification to understand how the legitimacy of political rule is grounded in concepts derived from religious worldviews.

The Postdoctoral sub-project
The researcher will examine the role of myths and theological concepts in the history and legacy of monarchy in a South East Asian country. The research will produce a theory on how divine ordinance and similar religiopolitical ideas legitimise the power of monarchs and dynastic politicians in Asia and beyond.
Activities
Write and submit at least two articles based on this research to reputed journals.
Collaborative research and co-authoring one article with the PI.
Relocating to Oslo and participation in the daily life of the project
Participate in collaborative research and dissemination activities of the POLDEI project.
Requirements
- PhD degree in study of religion, history, political science, anthropology, culture studies or related disciplines.
- Good track record of academic publishing
- Good command of academic English
- Preference will be given to candidates who can operate within the vernacular language of the region they are studying
Professional environment
The Postdoc candidate will be mentored by Dr. Moumita Sen, the Principle Investigator of the POLDEI project. You would work in close collaboration with the whole team which includes one PhD-scholar, two postdoctoral fellows, a senior researcher, and an administrative officer. In addition, the postdoc fellow will be expected to integrate in the research community of the institution.

The research project template document mentions only PhD candidates. But postdoctoral and senior researchers are supposed to use the same for their research projects.

Conditions
Location: MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society, Oslo (presence required).
Contract duration: 2 years from 01/02/2025.
The annual salary will be NOK 584 500 according to the State Wage Scale pay grade 60. In addition, an annual grant amounting to NOK 20.000 (for operating expenses, travel, conferences etc.) and Membership of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse), and Membership of collective Group Life - and occupational injuries insurance scheme.
