We are looking for a Phd candidate at the Department for Air Quality and Noise, Division for Climate and Environmental Health at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) in Oslo. The department conducts research and advice in the areas of outdoor air pollution, noise, greenness, temperature and the effect of these environmental factors on health.
The doctorate is part of the EU-funded project "healthriskADAPT– User-driven Health risk Assessment Services and Innovative ADAPTation options as Transformative Solutions against Threats from Heatwaves, Air Pollution, Wildfire Emission and Pollen" which starts in November 2024. The project will focus on transformative solutions that will help reduce the effects of climate change on public health. Communication with key stakeholders will be an important part of the project.
We are looking for a motivated and creative candidate with strong analytical skills who can investigate the risk of several environmental risks and consequences for health and related adaptation in urban areas of Norway and other EU countries.
Work tasks
- Conduct a critical evidence appraisal of urban exposures and health outcomes in Norway
- Link Norwegian health registry data and socioeconomic data to exposure data from all environmental variables
- Generate a database of relevant variables and perform statistical analysis of individual and co-exposures
- Compare these results to other cities in Europe and co-develop local adaptation strategies
- Publish scientific papers and project reports
- Present results at scientific meetings
- Participate in project meetings
- Guidance of students involved in the projects
Qualifications
- A master's degree specializing in: Public health/ /Environmental epidemiology/Health economics/Environmental Statistics or other related fields
- Proven good analytical skills and preferably experience with programming (eg R studio/Stata/ Python) and GIS software (eg QGIS) for data analysis
- Experience with environmental- and health data and statistics
- Proven skills in scientific writing

- Excellent communication skills in English and preferably an understanding of Norwegian

This is a position of 36 months (3 years), full-time, with the expectation that the candidate will deliver and defend the PhD thesis within this period. The candidate needs to be registered at a recognized Norwegian university for the Phd. FHI will help the candidate in finding an additional supervisor from the university. Note that candidates must pay the university tuition fees themselves. We require the candidate to be based primarily in Oslo. The position starts on 1 November 2024.
