From a Crooked Rib is the debut and promising novel of Nuruddin Farah. This novel typifies Farah as a socially engaged and engrossed novelist. It is a prototype feminist novel that ossified the station of Farah in the literary circles as a novelist who advocates and contests the condition and cause of Somali women in particular and by corollary all women in general.

The novelist addresses and thereby aims to redress the very serious issues like patriarchal hegemony, female circumcision and wife bartering rituals of the Somalian

society. From a Crooked Rib revolves round the focal character Ebla – a fourteen year old girl who falls prey to the piggish patriarchy that has no qualms and compunction to barter

women like cows and camels.
