Pab is a wall system arising from a complex design involving materials and technologies. The project revolves around the concept of shelf, designed based on a very simple idea: that of a sheet folded in half and restrained by light ties, for use as a bookshelf and top. Through clever engineering and high quality materials, the resulting sense of lightness actually hides a very robust system. The concept of the storage unit has thus been developed, using the shelf to create a contemporary design based on aesthetic simplicity, practicality, accessibility and quality details. Besides the shelves, however, Pab also offers a series of traditional units meeting specific storage needs, as well as multi-purpose benches which can also be fitted with drawers. The vast choice of finishes and hues, along with the variety of furnishing elements, make it possible to obtain countless personalised configurations and solutions.
B&B Italia: a chapter in the grand history of Italian design:
B&B Italia is an internationally renowned Italian Group leader in the high-end designer furniture sector built on a strong entrepreneurial spirit and a future-oriented mindset.
The Product – Manufacturing design icons over its 53 years of history, B&B Italia has designed more than 1200 products which marked the evolution of the furniture sector on a global scale.
Many of these products became design icons that hold a spot inside museums and prestigious public locations: their timeless and innovative nature will serve as inspiration for future generations of designers. One of the most prestigious designers are Antonio Citterio.
Antonio Citterio was born in the Italian city of Meda in 1950. He opened his own studio in 1972 and completed his degree in architecture at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 1975. Between 1987 and 1996, he collaborated with Terry Dawn to design many buildings across Europe and Japan. In 2000, Citterio and Patricia Viel formed a multidisciplinary office for architecture, interior design and graphics. The office operates internationally, developing complex long-term projects in synergy with a qualified network of specialist consultants. The practice is now called 'Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel'.
‘I would never go on developing something that I wouldn’t want to have in my own house. I can’t force things. If something doesn’t work, I don’t make it. It’s that simple.’
Antonio Citterio. In addition to his collaboration with Vitra, Antonio Citterio works in the industrial design sector with companies such as Flexform, Kartell, Maxalto, Geberit, Poliform, Boffi, Eames, Vitra, Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen, Molteni, Minotti, Meridiani, Slettvoll, Kasthall, Cappellini, Asplund, Kymo, NTK, Hästens, Herman Miller, Edra, Flos, Santa Cole, Louis Poulsen, Muuto, MDF Italia, Montana, USM Haller, Walter Knoll, Naver Collection, Foscarini, Hay, Gubi, Cassina, Boffi, De Padova, Missonia, Moroso, Artwood, Naver, Living Divani, Citterio served as professor of architecture at the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Mendrisio from 2006 to 2016. He was named 'Royal Designer for Industry' by the London-based Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce in 2008.
Antonio Citterio. The architect and designer Antonio Citterio, who lives and works in Milan, has collaborated with Vitra since 1988. Together they have produced a series of office chairs and various office systems, as well as products for the Vitra Home Collection. The Citterio Collection is constantly being expanded.
One of the most influential architects and designers on the contemporary scene, Antonio Citterio, born in 1950, can be considered one of the main protagonists of the success of Made-in-Italy furniture. Born in Meda near Milan, Citterio was designing furniture even before he got his degree in Architecture from Milan Polytechnic in 1975. Together with Paolo Nava, he founded his first studio in 1972. Meda, in the heart of Brianza, quickly became one of the most important furniture manufacturing districts, thanks to several family-run businesses with longstanding artisanal traditions. The town absorbed innovative ideas from nearby Milan, often conveyed by young, enthusiastic designers born and raised in the area. Citterio's career began in this context. Some competitors and shops of Antonio Citterio products Expo Nova, Tannum, Poliform, Boffi, Vipp, Maxalto, Flexform, Eames, Vitra, Fritz Hansen, Arne Jacobsen, Molteni, Minotti, Meridiani, Slettvoll, Kasthall, Cappellini, Asplund, Kymo, NTK and Hästens. He frequented the Galimberti home at a time when the family business was about to become Flexform. He also had ties to the Busnelli family, owners of B&B Italia.
With his colleague Paolo Nava, he collaborated on several sofas, starting with the Aria model for Flexform (1978) and Diesis for B&B (1979), still in production today. This was the beginning of a long career in product design and the architectural design of showrooms, factories, hotels, and residential and commercial complexes. After a ten-year collaboration with American architect Terry Dwan, he opened Antonio Citterio and Partners in 1999 with Patricia Viel. Today the firm, known as Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel, is a multifaceted office with commissions in different fields, including design and architecture.
As a designer, Antonio Citterio is best known for his sofas, considered the undisputed icons that revolutionised contemporary lifestyles. Anticipating the times, Citterio had foreseen that the anachronistic formal living room only for guests would give way to a more lively and dynamic space. In the 1980s, the living room became the centre of the home, and the sofa became its most central piece of furniture. Citterio transformed the classic sofa into a multifunctional and modular seating system with generous dimensions for absolute comfort. Among his many projects are the Sity system for B&B Italia, winner of the Compasso d'Oro in 1986; the Charles (1997); AC Lounge (2009) and Richard (2016) collections, also for B&B Italia; the Groundpiece (2001) and Soft Dream (2010) sofas by Flexform.
Citterio has created furnishings and accessories from armchairs to storage units, office chairs, tapware, lighting, and table accessories. He has collaborated with Vitra, Maxalto, Flos, for whom he designed the Kevin lamp, winner of the Reddot Design Award in 2004, and Kartell, with whom he won his second Compasso d'Oro in 1993 for the Mobil storage unit. Citterio also designs kitchens for Boffi and furniture for Montana, USM Haller, Walter Knoll, Meridiani, Antonio Lupi. His work is exhibited in the permanent collections of some of the most important design museums in the world: MoMA in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Architecture & Design in Chicago.
