The Siel Mono is a vintage Italian monophonic synthesizer, released around 1981 by Siel, an Italian company known for affordable yet unique synthesizers. It is a 37-key analog subtractive synthesizer, which means it shapes sounds by filtering harmonics from a rich waveform, offering a single voice of polyphony. The synth includes 10 preset sounds such as tuba, piccolo, trombone, saxophone, and guitar, but also features a “Free” mode where users can adjust parameters for more customizable sound creation.
Key features include a digital oscillator (DCO) with saw and square waveforms, and a multimode filter (lowpass, highpass, bandpass). It has a basic ADSR envelope and an onboard analog chorus effect called “Animator,” which adds a warm, modulated sound similar to vibrato. However, the synth lacks modern conveniences like MIDI or CV control, limiting its integration with other gear. It’s particularly praised for its rich, warm sound, which is described as having a distinct “Italian flavor.”
Despite its limitations, the Siel Mono has become a collectible due to its unique sound and affordability compared to other monophonic synthesizers from brands like Moog and Roland .
