904L Stainless Steel Case. Tilsvarende stål som Rolex benytter. It is richer in copper, nickel, and chromium than the typical 316L stainless steel found in most timepieces. 904L has a slightly higher nickel discharge, and thus a slightly higher resistance to corrosion. 904L is mainly used in industry applications handling chlorides, sulfur dioxide gas or other toxic materials. 904L stainless steel is a unique and highly valuable material.

Benthos H1, keeping with the traditions

In 1970 Aquastar released what was to become one of the most iconic dive watches ever: the Benthos 500. The first non monobloc cased dive watch to be designed to operate at 500 meters depth. Building on the trend of that era to make dive watches bigger and more substantial, the 500 measured in at: 47mm lug to lug, 42mm wide (48mm if you measure across the offset crown), with a 4mm thick crystal and had a 20mm lug width. Retaining the original proportions and exact dimensions of the 1970 Benthos 500, the new 2023 Benthos H1 is built around a tonneau-shaped 42mm 904L stainless steel case, with the crown once again in its unique position at 2:00. As the purest expression of the Benthos visual DNA, this reference is powered by a Swiss-made ETA 2824-2 élaboré grade movement, and has been embellished with modern updates throughout, including a unidirectional rotating dive bezel with a ceramic insert, and generously applied modern SuperLuminova. Just like the original Benthos with its pioneering depth resistance, the H1 also maintains a robust 500 meters of water resistance — making it the deepest diving modern Aquastar to date. Bold but comfortable

The Benthos H1 boasts bold dimensions, but it’s a pleasantly deceiving watch on the wrist. I credit the short lugs for making this a truly wearable diver. Over two years ago, I wore this watch over a long weekend in Barcelona. Aside from that cheeky feeling one gets from wearing forbidden fruit, I never felt the heft and truly enjoyed it. The pool, the ocean, seafood shanties, etc. — it was the perfect watch for such a vacation. As I said, the finishing and quality felt great, yet it’s this big, hairy kind of diver. Plus, I’ve grown to greatly enjoy the comfort of an ISOfrane strap. In any case, if the thickness has you worried, I never really noticed it. Would it work with a slim-fitting dress shirt? I highly doubt it, but it’s an incredibly fun watch to wear otherwise. (fratellowatches.com).
