The simplicity is achieved by fixing parameters such as threshold and attack. The sensitivity control adjusts the compression ratio. Paul followed this description with `like most guitar pedals, it's built to sound good, rather than perform to an accurate specification. It also compresses in a non linear fashion to ensure a smooth sound.

IMO, the pedal tightens the low end a little while giving a slight bump to the low mids. It also adds a a touch of crispness/clarity to the Bass tone. Of course, it evens out the volume a nice way and goes all the way to squashed if you want that. Works really well for articulate playing.
