Are you passionate about tomorrow's marine technology?
Ocean Space Acoustics (OSAC) is a small company with 13 employees working in subsea positioning and underwater communication. Our first products were launched earlier this year after 6 years in development, and we are now focusing on scaling up our development and operations departments to meet increasing customer demand. To be able to deliver in these exciting times, we seek a CTO to help us grow and professionalize our development team going forward.
The challenge we solve
On land the GPS and other GNSS constellations give precise information about where we are. Same is true for any equipment we tag with such positioning units. However, as soon as you go below water the positioning becomes much more complicated. We at OSAC have developed a new system that we have called PingMe to solve this issue by measuring the positioning of our sensors, attached to for example a fishnet, relative to a known position, such as a ship. Due to the precision and low cost of our solution, we can work in new markets that previously had no such viable solution available.
Our current market focus is fisheries where we can tag fishing gear and make a real difference in fighting ghost fishing and maritime pollution. By 2030, we aim to have prevented 28 000 sets of lost fishing gear worldwide, saving at least 400 000 marine animals. In addition to giving precise subsea positioning, our system also has integrated sensors such as temperature and pressure sensors. These sensor measurements can be communicated to vessels within a few kilometers for real-time updates. If the vessel has Internet access our cloud services will be updated in real-time as well.
The opportunity
We at Ocean Space Acoustics are proud that we have built such a complex system from the ground up. This is, however, only the start, and the company is now very much on the start line for a scale-up phase. To succeed in this next phase, we need a hands-on CTO to manage our development team and contribute to future roadmaps and business decisions. This role will naturally evolve together with the company, and we expect there in the beginning to be room for both doing some development work yourself in addition to focusing on structuring and leading a team of brilliant engineers.
Responsibilities
The main responsibilities involve overseeing, leading, and managing the development team and R&D activities on a day-to-day basis. This includes:
- Having a good understanding of our technical architecture and what we should do to continue evolving our platform
- Coordinate the team of engineers with a focus on resource planning and capability
- Ensure and continuously improve QA processes for code quality, performance, reliability, and security
- Be responsible for integrating strategy and business needs into our products and services, making sure we make the right choices when it comes to technology
- Represent the development department in product and application forums
- Provide technical sales support
Your profile
We are looking for an entrepreneurial, self-driven and enthusiastic person with
good communication skills and experience in the following:
- Managing and leading a tech team
- Jira (or similar) project management system
- Underwater acoustics and subsea equipment
- Analog and digital hardware in embedded systems
- Signal processing software development using C, C++, Python and MATLAB
- Cloud infrastructure and web development
- Linux and Windows Operating Systems
You are not required to tick off all the items above, but you must be interested in learning more about them and leading a team that covers all these aspects
So if you are intrigued by this position, but have some doubts about whether your
experience matches our needs, why not get in touch, and we can find out together?
We offer
- An open collaborative workplace where you can have immediate impact
- Influence over the company’s overall strategy and direction as a member of the management group
- Free car parking outside our office
- Free lunch at the office
- Mobile phone coverage
- Competitive salary, pension and insurance scheme
We hope to hear from you! For any questions, feel free to contact Håkon Skjelten, hakon.skjelten@osac.no or + 47 99 74 70 75.
Om arbeidsgiveren
Ocean Space Acoustics is a visionary and environmentally engaged new company that has spun out from SINTEF (Norway’s largest research institution). Our patented acoustic sensor technology is based on many years of research, and has resulted in products that help fishermen, researchers and other occupational groups monitor the position of their underwater equipment, and to locate and retrieve it if it gets lost. Our vision is to really make a difference when it comes to contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable ocean, as well as providing critical environmental data for planning and executing work under water.
