Max is a wild and sensitive boy who feels misunderstood at home with his mother and older sister. After a tantrum, the mother gets angry and sends the boy to bed without dinner. Max chooses to flee. He ends up with the huttetu; large, strange creatures in a desolate landscape. At first Max is seen as the next dinner, but with fabulous abilities he manages to convince them that he is their new king. They have longed for leadership, and believe Max will give them back their happiness and courage. Things go well for a while, but Max quickly finds out that ruling a kingdom is a delicate balancing act. The relationship with the others becomes complicated. Their relationship between them is characterized by joys, sorrows, strengths and weaknesses, just like at Max's home. He realizes that everyone has their own struggles. It will be learning for life - in fantasy as in reality.
