Jerusalem - Chronicles from the Holy City by Guy Delisle (Hardback Graphic Novel) 50kr
First Hardcover Edition April 2012
ISBN: 978-1-77046-071-3
Publisher: Drawn and Quarterly , 2012
Edition: Hardcover

Guy Delisle expertly lays the groundwork for a cultural road map of contemporary Jerusalem, utilizing the classic stranger in a strange land point of view that made his other books, Pyongyang, Shenzhen, and Burma Chronicles required reading for understanding what daily life is like in cities few are able to travel to. In Jerusalem: Chronicles from the Holy City, Delisle explores the complexities of a city that represents so much to so many. He eloquently examines the impact of the conflict on the lives of people on both sides of the wall while drolly recounting the quotidian: checkpoints, traffic jams, and holidays.
When observing the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim populations that call Jerusalem home, Delisle's drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. Jerusalem showcases once more Delisle's mastery of the travelogue.

This book deals with the medieval foundations of Western civilization, rather than with the medieval history of the Mediterranean world. The emphasis is on the Latin West, even in the early period when both Byzantium and Islam were far in advance of Western culture. Historians have differed in their interpretation of the essential characteristics of the Middle Ages as a stage in Western civilization. If one thinks of Western history as beginning with the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome, one sees the Middle Ages as Gibbon did, as a long period of decline. But if one considers the ancient world as an independent civilization, though related to its successors, perhaps the most important single fact about the glory and grandeur of antiquity is that its civilization was a colossal failure. So far as the West was concerned, this failure was already final and complete before the fusion of the Roman heritage, the barbarian Germanic element, and Christianity inaugurated the Middle Ages. While this fusion was slowly taking place, there was a gradual process of separation of the West from the Greek East and an abrupt break off from the African and Near Eastern parts of the antique Mediterranean world which resulted from the sudden rise of Islam. The heritage of antiquity dazzled the survivors of its ruins, but the important historical fact is that these survivors did indeed build upon the ruins. What they built, and how it was built, is the subject of this book: the medieval foundations of Western civilization.

The provocative classic work newly updated
An intimate personal odyssey across America's changing sexual landscape
When first published, Gay Talese's 1981 groundbreaking work, Thy Neighbor's Wife, shocked a nation with its powerful, eye-opening revelations about the sexual activities and proclivities of the American public in the era before AIDS. A marvel of journalistic courage and craft, the book opened a window into a new world built on a new moral foundation, carrying the reader on a remarkable journey from the Playboy Mansion to the Supreme Court, to the backyards and bedrooms of suburbia—through the development of the porn industry, the rise of the "swinger" culture, the legal fight to define obscenity, and the daily sex lives of "ordinary" people. It is the book that forever changed the way Americans look at themselves and one another.

This “appreciative biography that rolls as smoothly as a film reel” (Cleveland Plain Dealer) celebrates one of cinema’s greatest clowns, painting a detailed portrait of the man behind the mayhem and offering a fresh look at the classic comedies that defined the Golden Age of Silent Film. Writer—and avowed fan—Edward McPherson takes the reader on a fascinating journey through Buster Keaton’s life and times, from the vaudeville stage to the glittering screens of early Hollywood, where he rivaled even Charlie Chaplin as the master of silent comedy.
Based on extensive research, this biography reveals Keaton in his prime as an antic genius—equal parts auteur, innovator, prankster, and daredevil—focusing on his glorious 1920s films, which “McPherson evokes with insight and enthusiasm” (Washington Post Book World).

THE MULTI-MILLION-COPY GLOBAL BESTSELLER. SOON TO BE A MAJOR MOVIE.
Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. And when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life seems too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.
With this bold and deeply personal novel, It Ends With Us is a heart-wrenching story and an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.
