Clean coder needed for our FORTRAN engine
Who are we?
Gexcon was founded in 1987 as a consulting brand of Christian Michelsen Institute. In 1998, Gexcon was established as an independent company providing advanced safety engineering software, consulting and fire and explosion testing services. We are headquartered in Bergen and operate globally from offices around the world.
Our flagship software, FLACS-CFD, is considered world-leading on advanced dispersion, explosion and fire modelling. Being a CFD tool, high performance on numerical and scientific computing is of paramount importance. For this reason, its engine is written in FORTRAN.
Our current tech lead for our FORTRAN code base is retiring within the next couple of years, and we want to ensure a smooth hand-over. Therefore, we are now looking for an experienced, forward-thinking and curious team player to help drive the development and structure of the FLACS-CFD engine, as well as other software products.
What are we looking for?
We are first and foremost looking for someone to join either our Bergen or Trondheim office who understands and enjoys working with code structures and architecture in FORTRAN. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for coding and its associated best practices. Whether you are a seasoned professional or a promising candidate with less experience, we are interested in hearing from you.
Experience with FORTRAN is not necessary if you have solid experience with “similar” languages like C++ or Julia and you are motivated to work in FORTRAN. The exact responsibilities for this position will be tailored to the individual candidate, but we hope to find someone who over time can take on a tech-lead role for our FORTRAN codebase, and who we also hope would want to contribute in other parts of our tech stack.
The following qualifications are also a big plus:
- Ability to write clean, testable, and maintainable code
- Good understanding of numerical methods and linear algebra
- Master's or PhD degree in computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics, or similar fields
- Experience developing and improving 3D CFD software or FEA software
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Experience with lean development processes
What we can offer:
- Competitive conditions including attractive salary and pension scheme
- Freedom and responsibility - We provide the security of a well-established and successful company but try to maintain a start-up feel by giving our employees lots of freedom, responsibility, and opportunity to influence the development choices and direction of our products.
- Working in a fantastic multi-disciplinary team combining backgrounds from physics and mathematics with computer science
- Interesting and challenging work, especially balancing accuracy and calculation speed, and with the new directions we’re moving into, such as cloud technologies, and AI/ML
- Inspiring colleagues from 20 different countries and an organisation that highly values cooperation and knowledge sharing
- Modern office facilities centrally located in Bergen and Trondheim
- Opportunity to be involved in the green energy transition
- A positive working environment that facilitates a healthy work-life balance
