Roger guitars were crafted by German luthier Wenzel Rossmeisl, who named the brand after his son, Roger Rossmeisl. Wenzel, a jazz guitarist trained in luthiery in Mittenwald, Germany, began producing these instruments in the late 1930s. The Rossmeisl family was among the pioneers in Germany’s electric guitar manufacturing, creating the country’s first electric guitar—a lap steel model—in 1947.
The Roger line primarily featured high-quality archtop guitars, notable for their craftsmanship and distinctive “German Carve”—an indented contour around the body’s top edge. This design element was later popularized in the U.S. by luthiers like Semie Moseley of Mosrite.
In the 1950s, Roger guitars gained recognition for their exceptional build quality and tonal characteristics, appealing to jazz and swing musicians. Models such as the Roger Junior Cutaway were particularly esteemed.
Roger Rossmeisl, after whom the brand was named, apprenticed under his father before moving to the United States. There, he became influential in guitar design, contributing to iconic models for Rickenbacker—like the Capri series—and later for Fender, where he developed instruments such as the Fender Coronado and the Montego.
Production of Roger guitars continued until 1962, after which Wenzel Rossmeisl ceased manufacturing under the Roger name. Today, vintage Roger guitars are sought after by collectors.
