Description:

Activist of Socialist Work was a state award of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which was awarded in the form of a medal. It was established on July 28, 1969 and replaced the previously awarded awards Activist of the Seven-Year Plan, its predecessor Activist of the Five-Year Plan and Medal for Outstanding Achievement. There were also honorary titles for young activists and Outstanding Young Activists, which were awarded by the FDJ and the FDGB to young people in school or training for exceeding the required level of commitment and achievement.

The honorary title could be awarded repeatedly to all workers in all areas of business and social life. The only requirement was that the recipient had achieved outstanding achievements in building socialism and in consolidating and strengthening the GDR. This included the simplest things right up to the application of new working methods or exceeding the production plan. The award for Activist of Socialist Work was assessed and perceived very differently.

The bronze-colored medal, in the shape of an upside-down square with rounded corners, had an edge length of 25 mm and showed on its obverse a red enameled or lacquered grained center field with a hammer and compass. To the left and right of this an ear of corn. The reverse shows the inscription:

"LIVING IN A SOCIALIST WAY REQUIRES WORKING IN A SOCIALIST WAY".

In 1969, the medal was awarded with a bronze clasp, which was also enameled in red grained. From 1970 onwards, it was then awarded with the GDR's national coat of arms. If the award was given multiple times, a two, three or four-fold miniature clasp was awarded. These showed the bronze clasp with the national coat of arms applied.
