Postdoctoral researcher in Atlantic salmon skin health
About the postion
Are you interested in aquaculture research involving fundamental approach generating industry-relevant impact?
Nofima has a vacant postdoctoral position associated with the Department of Nutrition and Feed Technology which will commence in Spring 2025, and with a duration of 3 years. The place of work is Bergen and involve short-term work assignments in Ås and Sunndalsøra.
We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic colleague to work in the Research Council of Norway funded project, OsmoProtect: Dietary and cellular osmolytes in protecting Atlantic salmon skin from pre-disposition to winter wounds.
The project aims to understand the osmotic physiology underlying the skin health challenges faced by farmed Atlantic salmon especially during winter. You will be involved in fundamental and applied research to (1) Understand the physiology underlying the onset of winter wounds in Atlantic salmon. (2) Devise dietary strategies that will help protect Atlantic salmon skin from predisposition of winter wounds.
You will have the unique opportunity to address key issues regarding the nutritional significance for Atlantic salmon skin health exploring a frontier research area at the interface of fish nutrition, physiology and health science disciplines.
The main task will include
- Planning, coordination and follow up of two experimental feeding trials at Nofima's aquaculture research station at Sunndalsøra.
- The position will involve a certain amount of hands-on practical work in relation to field samplings at commercial-scale aquaculture operations.
- Perform in vitro cell culture experiments, sample collection, chemical and molecular biological analyses, as well as processing of data.
- You will also assist in reporting and publishing and participate in relevant meetings and conferences.
Qualifications
- PhD in the field of aquaculture.
- Good knowledge of the Norwegian aquaculture industry and its challenges, especially salmon farming.
- Practical experience with planning and execution of fish feeding trials is required.
- Relevant laboratory work experience. Experience with fundamental biochemical and molecular analyses of biological samples is a pre-requisite, while experience with in vitro cell culture experiments, and chromatographic techniques is an advantage.
- Ability to perform high-quality work, both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Good written and oral presentation skills in English.
- Active in scientific and popular science communication (social media, academic and popular scientific presentations).
