Hydro Energy, part of the global aluminum and renewable energy company Hydro, boasts over a century of expertise in renewable energy production and helps industries reduce their emissions and transition to a renewable society. We are one of Norway's top three operators of hydropower and one of the world's largest purchasers of renewable power through long-term agreements. Our focus extends beyond traditional energy production; we're actively exploring opportunities in renewable energy, and flexible technologies to take Hydro into the future. Energy Markets is the business unit responsible for maximizing the value of Hydro's power and gas portfolio and for providing energy portfolio management for our aluminum activities in Europe, the US and Brazil.
The Market Intelligence department in Energy Markets is a center of competence and innovation in market analysis and asset optimization in Hydro Energy. We deliver cutting-edge insight and custom solutions quickly to capitalize from changes in the market or technology landscape. We actively support decisions of those planning power production, trading on European markets and sourcing energy, by delivering:
- Nordic power price prognoses. Spanning from day-ahead forecasts to projections up to 3 years ahead, with ambitions to extend this scope to the next 5-10 years.
- Power market analysis. Following market development and trends, translating large amounts of data into actionable business insight.
- A portfolio of products. Developing, enhancing, maintaining a range of market models and applications that are operated in close cooperation with Hydro‘s internal IT resources.
- Flexible IT solutions and decision-support tools. From conceptualization to development and production, enabling commercial excellence in daily operations and long-term strategic decisions.
Our department is renowned for its responsive and high-quality market service, delivering timely insights when called upon. We are now seeking 2 talented individuals to join our team of 11 professionals and take on the flexible role of Power Market/Data Scientist. Our responsibilities are dynamic and evolve over time, so we are looking for candidates who are adaptable and eager to contribute to various aspects of our operations. As part of an engaged and interdisciplinary team with a strong team spirit, you will get the opportunity to involve and immerse yourself in multiple areas, and to be close to a continuously changing power market.
Areas of responsibility
The main responsibility of the team is to deliver short- to medium-term analysis and digital solutions that can support Hydro's power market activity in Europe. This means working at the intersection of market analysis and development, and:
- Collect and analyse data
- Conduct market research and forecasting to assess current and future technologies, regulations and trends
- Run existing and develop new quantitative models (both fundamental and statistical) to support decision-making in European Energy Markets
- Perform analysis (short and medium term) for the Nordic and German power markets
- Preferably join our daily operational duties being responsible for creating short-term power price forecasts (specifically for NO2 & NO5) and presenting it to Market Operations and Trading, together with weather and market drivers
- Assist other departments in energy related ad-hoc analysis and projects, e.g. investment decisions in new hydropower projects
- Tailor digital solutions for optimizing wind and hydropower production in Norway and the Nordics
- Develop our data infrastructure with a strong sense of ownership and eagerness to build new insights through automation and modelling
- Contribute to the entire lifecycle of digital products developed in Energy Markets
- Use machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) for applications development
- Present to internal stakeholders (e.g. Hydro Energy's Management Group or Hydro's Executive Leadership Team)
- Collaborate with internal strategic stakeholders (e.g. IT), external model developers, R&D partners, service and data suppliers
While you will be expected to engage with many of these responsibilities, it is understood that not all tasks will be within your scope of work, depending on your background, expertise and interests.
Desired qualifications
To thrive and succeed in this role, we believe the right candidate holds the following qualifications:
- Master's degree in relevant fields such as economics, mathematics, statistics, optimization, computer science, or engineering (other subjects may be relevant)
- Solid experience from the power industry and power markets, but we also encourage you to apply if you are a recent graduate with courses in these fields
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, as well as programming competency in Python
- Experience with power market models (e.g. EMPS, BID3, etc) is an advantage
- Experience with DevOps, agile methodologies, Cloud, data infrastructure, SQL, software development or cyber security is also advantageous
- Experience with cross-culture environment and cross-functional teams
- English fluency is required, both oral and written, Norwegian fluency is an advantage
