After months of intensive coaching, Eliza breaks through her speech barrier. Henry Higgins decides to celebrate by taking her to Ascot. Although her English is perfect, and she looks absolutely stunning in her slim lacy gown, dramatic hat and parasol, Eliza has a few surprises in store that Henry hadn’t anticipated.
At the races, Henry Higgins tells his mother not to worry about the flower girl he’s invited to join them. Eliza has strict orders to stick to two topics, the weather and everyone’s health. And Eliza does. Henry beams with pride as she is introduced to everyone in his mother’s box. Every word rolls off Eliza’s tongue perfectly. Parroting the phrases Henry has taught her, Eliza even carries on a conversation about the weather.
But when the subject turns to health, Eliza deviates. Her story is filled with language no one’s heard before. Puzzled, they politely question the phrases. Henry quickly jumps in and tells them that it’s the new slang. Eliza elaborates even more, as Henry agonizes.
When the races start, Henry only too gladly whisks Eliza away. But the clomping of horses hooves doesn’t quiet Eliza. As the excitement mounts, her crowning achievement comes when the horses gallop past. At the top of her voice, Eliza cheers on her horse in language that’s greeted by stunned silence, gasps and fainting. Eliza has definitely made an impression.
As everyone leaves, Henry’s mother tells him to give up the whole idea. He concedes that Eliza’s language might need a little refining, but isn’t dissuaded in the least from his fascinating adventure.
