Palwa Lighting History:
Well known for the quality of the crystals & originality of design, Palwa has been operating in Germany since the second world war.
Palwa owes much of its success to earlier Bohemian glass producers. In 1724 Josef Palme-Mahl was the first to make crystal chandeliers, a transformation of the earlier Flemish brass crown design but in glass.
Josef Palme-Mahl initially worked to commissions for the Royal Courts such as France`s King Louis XV and the Brussel`s Palace of the Grand Duchess Maria Elisabeth.
His chandelier for the Viennese residence of the Austrian Empress Maria Theresia led to the company`s iconic `Maria Theresa Luster` which is still in production today. (photo source "History of crystal chandeliers" by Ingrid Solfronk).
Josef`s son Christopher Palme carried on the business and namesake which continues today.
At the end of the second world war in 1945 the Palme chandelier factory was nationalized by the Government of Czechoslovakia. The workers fled to Germany and it is around this time three German lighting companies emerged bearing the name Palme; Christopher Palme, Ernst Palme and Palme & Walter. All three companies settled in the middle of Germany and appear to share common ancestry.
References on the internet suggest terms of attributions of designs. All three Palme companies appear to have collaborated with Palwa Lighting of Germany. One thing the three companies share today, is their use of quality crystals & attention to detail.
Palwa Lighting company from Germany after nearly 80 years still exists today. Palwa has a historical worldwide reputation as a manufacturer of beautiful light fittings with their own in-house design department and craftsmen who produce special one-off designs. For this reason their vintage pieces by Palme & Walter are becoming very rare to find and sought after.
