Senior or Principal Engineer for NGIs Dam Safety Section
Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) is experiencing an increasing demand for our expertise related to hydropower dam safety and safe management of mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs). NGIs section on dam safety contains a core group of experts in both water-retaining and tailings dams working with consulting and research projects for an international client base. The section is also supported by expertise from the broader NGI organization.

Work description
A successful candidate will contribute their geotechnical and dam safety expertise to both consulting and research projects for our international client base. This role offers the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects, contribute to the advancement of dam safety practices, and make a significant impact on the safety and sustainability of critical infrastructure around the world.
- Lead and manage complex projects related to water-retaining and tailings dams
- Conduct and oversee dam safety assessments, risk analyses, and performance evaluations
- Contribute to the development of innovative solutions for dam safety challenges
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders
- Collaborate closely with different teams within NGI to leverage diverse expertise
- Participate in industry conferences, technical committees, and professional networks to stay updated on the latest developments in dam safety
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior colleagues, supporting their professional growth
- Assist in business development by identifying new opportunities and contributing to proposal development
Qualifications
The candidate must have an MSc or PhD degree in structural or geotechnical engineering from an accredited university (with a focus on dams or TSFs preferred), and a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in a dam-safety related discipline. The ideal candidate should demonstrate proficiency in some or all of the qualifications listed below:
- Experience conducting dam safety reviews and risk assessments
- Proficiency in geotechnical characterization of soils and mine tailings
- In-depth understanding of monitoring and instrumentation systems for dam safety
- Experience with 2D and 3D stability analyses of dams and TSFs
- Knowledge of relevant national and international guidelines for dam and TSF safety
- A strong national and/or international network, including connections for project work, technical committees, and participation in conferences on dams and TSFs
- Ability to handle and analyze large datasets
- Experience in consultancy and R&D projects related to dams and dam safety
- Programming skills, particularly in Python or similar languages
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities
- Proficiency in English required; Norwegian or other Scandinavian language skills are a plus, but not a deciding factor
The position is based in Oslo, Norway. However, the candidate must be prepared for occasional travel to site visits, project meetings, and international conferences.
