Professor / Associate Professor in Operations Management
The Department of Accounting and Operations Management at BI Norwegian Business School invites applicants for the position of Professor / Associate Professor in Operations Management, with a preferred starting date in January 2026.
The Operations Management group has 9 employees covering education and research within the fields of logistics, operations management, operations research, supply chain management, supply chain analytics, business simulation and optimization. The department of Accounting and Operations Management has 45 employees in total of whom 40 % are international. Please see the Departments website for further information. Job description
We are looking for applicants with strong research capabilities in Operations Management (applicants should have published articles in journals that are included in the Financial Times list or that are rated as 4* or 4 within the subject area of Operations Research, Operations Management, and/or Supply Chain Management in the ABS list). Experience from research collaboration with the industry is an additional advantage. The successful applicant will join and strengthen an active and ambitious research group focusing on operations management, operations research, supply chain management, and supply chain analytics. They will further play an instrumental role in our major in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
Applicants must have a PhD degree and demonstrated teaching skills. BI will place emphasis on whether applicants have cooperated with the business sector and/or the public sector, including R&D work, research dissemination, and researchbased advisory services. Applicants are expected to actively contribute to the faculty at the department.
Expectations and obligations
Our faculty is expected to provide teaching and supervision of a high academic and pedagogical quality and is expected to continuously develop their teaching skills, e.g. by making use of new technology, new ways of learning and new forms of assessment. We focus on quality and competence development and pedagogical activities should be continuously documented, supporting the process for further academic career development to all positions.
Qualification Requirements
Scientific criteria
- PhD degree in Operations Management, Operations Research, Supply Chain Management or another relevant field
- A significant academic production considerably above and beyond a Ph.D.
- Established track record in top quality outlets within the relevant discipline
- Documented teaching abilities (e.g., a teaching certificate, experience in teaching, experience in course development and creation of teaching materials)
- BI requirements concerning educational qualifications according to governmental provisions and the specific scientific level
Other assessment criteria
- Language skills; Proficiency in oral and written English and Norwegian. Competence in Swedish or Danish is equivalent to Norwegian. Faculty appointments and promotions approved after 1. August 2025 will have Norwegian language requirements, as stated in the national regulations. All pedagogical and research positions must document language proficiency in Norwegian at minimum B2 level or be subject to acquiring the level within 3 years of the appointment
- Good communication skills
- Previous experience with teaching
- Research experience pertinent to business education
- Previous experience with successful grants applications and research fund raising Visibility within the international and national academic community
For all positions with research duty at BI there is a (minimum) expectation that the research production over a three-year period should on average result in at least 1 accepted/published article or equivalent that is original, well-conducted and thoroughly peer reviewed. Normally, there should be publications at level ABS 3 or higher, at NSD level 2 (or equivalent within the subject area), which qualify as original and well executed.
Those employed in a scientific position will also have teaching and pedagogical development responsibilities. In addition to traditional teaching, the position includes development of courses, learning activities, forms of evaluation, and guidance. According to governmental provisions BI has decided on requirements concerning the educational qualifications of permanently employed academic staff. As a minimum such qualifications shall meet the learning outcome of BIs pedagogical basic qualification courses or equivalent at all times. To the position of Associate Professor, and in some rare instances for international professors, this specific competence may be obtained within two years after commencing the position.
