Root-familien og Coca-Cola
1886 gled Coca-Cola Company inn i historien da Dr. John S. Pembertons nysgjerrighet førte til at han oppdaget den velsmakende brusen vi kjenner og elsker i dag. Dr. Pemberton skapte en sirup og brakte den til apoteket i nabolaget hvor han blandet den med kullsyreholdig vann, og de som prøvde den mente den var fantastisk. Dr. Pembertons partner og bokholder, Frank M. Robinson, er kreditert med å navngi drikken "Coca-Cola" i tillegg til å bruke det klassiske, gjenkjennelige manuset som fortsatt brukes i dag.
Før hans død i 1888, solgte Dr. Pemberton deler av selskapet sitt til forskjellige forretningsmenn, en av disse mennene var Asa G. Candler, som kjøpte størstedelen av Coca-Cola. Candler ble den eksklusive eieren av Coca-Cola. Han betalte 1200 dollar for maskineriet, utstyret og Coca-Colas hemmelige formel. Under Mr. Candlers regjeringstid utvidet Coca-Cola til brusfontener utenfor Atlanta-området.
Fasinert av hvor raskt Coca-Cola blomstret, lengtet Joseph Biedenharn etter å gjøre den populære brusen mobil. I 1894 skapte Mr. Biedenharn et lite tappemaskineri på baksiden av sin lille Mississippi brusfontene, og var den første personen som puttet Coca-Cola på flasker. Han brukte en flaske kalt "Hutchinson", som var tilgjengelig for alle typer drinker.
Omtrent fem år senere ble massetapping mulig. I 1899 sikret tre forretningsmenn i Chattanooga, Tennessee eksklusive rettigheter til å tappe og selge den etterspurte brusen for bare $1. Kort tid etter etablerte Benjamin Thomas, Joseph Whitehead og John Lupton det globalt brukte Coca-Cola tappesystemet. I 1899 ble over 280 000 liter sirup solgt, og i 1913 var nesten 7 millioner liter solgt.
Da Coca-Cola ble møtt med utfordringen fra andre konkurrenter, ble tapperiene enige om å ha en flaske som skulle skille seg ut for publikum. Benjamin Thomas og hans medarbeidere satte en frist for tappeselskaper for å komme opp med en distinkt, salgbar flaske for den aldri så populære brusen.
Blant de åtte til ti deltakerne var Root Glass Company i Terre Haute, Indiana. Medlemmer av Root Glass Co., Chapman J. Root, William Root, Alexander Samuelsson, Earl Dean og Clyde Edwards, jobbet endeløse timer i fullstendig hemmelighet, og produserte det de håpet skulle være den nye, umiskjennelige flasken for den elskede kullsyreholdige drikken. De skapte en flaske der de kalte "hobbleskjørtet", på grunn av likheten med skjørtstilen i 1910. Deres historiske flaske ble avledet fra formen av en kakaobønne, med en langstrakt formet og tydelige ribber. Når flasken ble utviklet, la Root Glass Company patent på under Samuelssons navn. Patentet ble gitt 16. november 1915. Denne datoen ble senere inkludert på den endelige utformingen av flasken.
Tidlig i 1916 møttes en komité sammensatt av tappere og bedriftstjenestemenn for å forhåpentligvis bestemme utformingen av flasken deres. Uten tvil var Root-versjonen en klar vinner. The Coca-Cola Company og Root Glass Company inngikk en avtale der flasken skulle lages gjennom seks fabrikker i USA. Kontrakten ba også om at flaskene skulle farges i "German Green", som senere ble endret til "Georgia Green." Vekten på flasken skulle ikke være mindre enn 14,5 gram og ble fylt med 6,5 gram Coca-Cola, noe som betyr at flasken veide mer enn et pund!
For mange tappere var det en svært kostbar endring å produsere denne tunge flasken. De måtte overbevises om at denne endringen ville være økonomisk verdt det. Coca-Cola begynte å gjøre det med nasjonal reklame, med denne nylig eksklusive flasken. Den første nasjonale kalenderen med flasken debuterte i 1918, og i 1920 brukte nesten alle tapperiene denne særegne flasken. 6,5 unse flasken var den eneste størrelsespakken tilgjengelig for Coca-Cola frem til 1955.
Tilfeldigvis, i desember 1923, ble patentet for flasken fornyet og den nye kallenavnet "Christmas Bottle" dukket opp og datoen på flasken ble endret til 25. desember 1923. I 1951 hadde alle patenter på flasken utløpt. Representanter fra Coca-Cola tok kontakt med patentkontoret og hevdet at formen på flasken var så kjent at den burde få varemerkestatus. Det er sjelden en kommersiell pakke får den statusen, men Coca-Cola skrev historie igjen. Den 12. april 1961 var Coca-Cola-flasken offisielt anerkjent som et varemerke. Dette ble bekreftet av en studie utført i 1949 som sa at mindre enn én prosent av amerikanerne ikke kunne identifisere Coca-Cola-flasken ved formen alene.
Selv om formen er universelt anerkjent, har konfigurasjonen av flasken utviklet seg gjennom årene. Det opprinnelige patentet på flasken fra 1915 var litt bredere enn dagens flaske. Dagens aluminiumsflaske er en oppdatering fra det 22. århundre av den opprinnelig utformede flasken.
