In 1906, Carlo was born into a very large upper-middle-class Italian family and grew to become the family's patriarch. As the story's central character, the film traces events in his life from his christening in 1906, where his grandfather reminds his father that Carlo means "free man," to his 80th birthday party. The film explores his relationships with younger brother Giulio, with wife Beatrice, and with her sister Adriana, whom Carlo loved as a young man and with whom he remained infatuated. As he dresses for his 80th birthday and generations of family arrive to celebrate, he reflects upon his past life.
