Over ten years ago, I ripped my CDs to a hard drive to stream over a Logitech device to my HiFi. Since that time my HiFi system has been through numerous upgrades and the SQ of that digital source was not acceptable to me, so I went back to a PS Audio Direct Stream DAC and Transport system that sounds great.

My media room that houses the Audio system and Home Theater has gone through a number of transitions, including rather extensive acoustic treatments. I also started adding pub games- first a professional quality dart board, then a Alley Cats shuffle bowling game.

We've been spending time with friends and neighbors and I thought some sort of music server would be great so I could set up play lists and not have to change discs. I thought I would research how good music servers have gotten over the years and found some interesting options. I knew there would be some SQ compromise over the DAC/Transport, but since it was background music I was okay with that as long as the quality was good.

I decided to go with the Cocktail Audio X50D. Not only could I rip my CDs to an internal SSD, but I could also stream from Apple Music, Amazon and other sources including internet radio.

One of the things I liked about the X50 was that it has an I2s output to connect to my PS Audio DAC. The other thing I liked was an HDMI out that lets the display get shown on a flatscreen TV, which I thought would be cool so the album art and song selection would be viewable from anywhere in the room during a gaming night with a small crowd.

I started ripping my CD collection and it takes about 10 minutes to rip a typical CD. I have the X50 connected by ethernet and it downloads metadata including album art while it rips. I am ripping to WAV files.

The first thing I did was rip a few CDs that had good SQ and I knew well so I could A/B the rip against the CD in the PS Audio transport through the same PS Audio DAC (it has two I2s inputs).

The CD in the transport was noticeably better, but it not by a significant margin. Music from the X50 sounds very natural and musical- in other words analog-like.

As a music server, it combines extensive functionality with extremely good SQ. The unit provides built in interfaces for streaming services like Spotify. Amazon Music requires a supplied app for Apple or Android devices, but the interface is nice and works well.

I can stream from my Apple Music account from my iPhone or iPad using the Apple Music app. Here is a picture of the interface streaming to the X50:

One thing I have not done yet is compare lossless streaming SQ to ripped CDs but I can tell you without an AB I would bet it is the same as it sounds really good.

I would highly recommend this for anyone looking for a versatile network player that I think most would consider audiophile quality sound.

I don't plan on using it instead of my Transport for serious listening sessions, but I could live with it if I had to very easily.
