About Junyo
The Junyo was an Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) aircraft carrier converted from the Nippon Yusen Kaisha (Japan Mail Steamship Company) ship Kashihara Maru. It was the first IJN carrier on which the ship´s bridge and funnel were contained in the same flight deck island superstructure. It was also the first IJN carrier fitted with Type 2 Mark 2 Model 1 Air Search Radar, which was located on top of its flight deck island. From May 25, 1942, only weeks after its completion, the Junyo set sail with IJN forces to participate in the Aleutian campaign. Filling in for IJN carrier losses subsequently suffered at Midwaym it later fought in the Guadalcanal theater of operations alongside the Shokaku and Zuikaku. Although its origins as a passenger/merchant ship meant it could not match the IJN´s first line carriers in terms of speed or defensibility, its operational capacity was the equal of Hiryu class carriers, and it was more than able to pull its weight in action.
On June 19, 1944, during the Battle of the Marianas, the Junyo suffered combat damage that rendered its flight deck unusable. It was, however, able to make its way back to Japan, after which it began duty as a transport ferrying supplies to Manila. On December 9, on its way from Taiwan to returnot its home port of Sasebo, the Junyo was torpedoed by an American submarine. The ship´s luck held out again, though, and it was able to make it back to port, where it underwent repairs that were finished in March 1945. After the completion of repairs, it made anchorage in Sasebo´s Ebisu Bay, where it was awaiting redeployment when the war ended on August 15. The carrier was struck from the rolls as part of abolishment of the IJN on November 30 of that year. The Junyo was broken up for scrap beginning in June 1946.
