High-Throughput Chemical Biology Screening Facility - A 2-year full time bioinformatics position is available from January 1st at the Department of Core
Facilities.
Institute for Cancer Research, Montebello is connected to the High-Throughput Chemical Biology Screening Platform at the Centre for Molecular Medicine Norway (NCMM). NCMM is a research centre for translational medicine, molecular biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics within the Medical Faculty of the University of Oslo (UoO), devoted to research and postgraduate training in addition to operating a number of technology platforms. UoO has established and continues to invest in a core facility for chemical biology offering high throughput screening services using small molecular chemical compounds in biological systems.
The facility is equipped with state of the art liquid handling technology and detection platforms, and together with a comprehensive chemical compound library (~70000 chemical compounds) it offers a unique portfolio of highly specialized services within the field of chemical biology. The Chemical Biology Facility today is operated as a service based core facility and is serving both academic research groups as well as small and medium-sized enterprises.
Since 2016, the facility is an approved Oslo University Hospital (OUH) core facility with Health South-East (HSØ) funding from 2019. It is part of the national infrastructure NOR-OPENSCREEN (www.openscreen.no/) which is a partner site in the European research infrastructure EU-OPENSCREEN (www.eu-openscreen.eu).
Tasks
Highly motivated individuals with an excellent track record bioinformatics, that can work both independently and as part of a team are welcome to apply. This is a unique opportunity for a person with the right mind set to develop in a scientific and dynamic environment.
The right candidate will be formally employed at the Dept. of Core Facilities, located at the Radium Hospital at Montebello, but work will be tightly connected to the Chemical Biology Facility at NCMM, Blindern.
The person will have the opportunity to participate in large chemical biology screening campaigns and will mainly be responsible for computational tasks like data analysis of screening campaigns, but will also participate in the planning of screens and in laboratory tasks, depending on demand and personal background.
Tasks include:
Analyse data sets from screening campaigns comprising several thousand data points.
Participate in the development and application of new data analysis tools and strategies.
Participate in compound- and data management using dedicated software packages and data bases.
Participate in planning and performing of large scale chemical biology screens.
Participate in transfer of bench top assays to automated, robot controlled high throughput screening
formats.
Depending on background and experience of the candidate other working tasks could also be considered.
Qualifications
A Master in Science degree in bioinformatics or a related area (biotechnology, engineering, chemistry, biochemistry or biology) is needed, but higher education in a relevant field would be valued. Experience from similar work can replace this formal requirement.
Skills
Good knowledge of computer scripting languages e.g. python and R is required.
Good knowledge in relational databases and related languages e.g. SQL is required.
Good knowledge in data mining e.g. KNIME is required.
Experience in managing small molecular compound libraries is of advantage.
Work experience with chemical biology and high throughput screening is of advantage.
A reliable, well organized candidate that has the flexibility needed for working in a service-oriented context will be preferred.
Good written and oral communication skills in English are required.
Basic knowledge in Norwegian, both written and oral, is preferred.
Ability to operate as a team player in a multi-disciplinary environment is crucial for a successful candidate.

Om arbeidsgiveren
Oslo University Hospital is a highly specialised hospital in charge of extensive regional and local hospital assignments and the provision of high quality services for the citizens of Oslo. The hospital also has a nationwide responsibility for a number of national and multi-regional assignments and has several national centres of competence. The hospital is Scandinavia's largest and we each year carry out more than 1.2 million patient treatments. Oslo University Hospital is responsible for approximately 50 percent of all medical and healthcare research conducted at Norwegian hospitals and is a significant role player within the education of a large variety of health care personnel. We are an emergency hospital for East and Southern Norway and have national emergency assignments. The hospital has a total budget of NOK 17 billion. More than 20,000 employees are engaged with activities at more than 40 different locations.
The University of Oslo is Norway's oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1814 and is the oldest medical faculty in Norway. The Faculty is organized into three basic units and has approximately 1,500 employees and about 2000 students. The Institute of Clinical Medicine (Klinmed) is one of three institutes under the Faculty. Klinmed is responsible for the Faculty's educational and research activities at Oslo University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital. With about 800 employees spread over approximately 425 man-labour years, Klinmed is the university's largest institute.
