PhD student in cancer epigenetics
A 3-year full time PhD position is available for an ambitious and motivated candidate, in the group headed by Dr. Deo Prakash Pandey (https://www.ous-research.no/pandey/). We are seeking a candidate with strong motivation and interest in cancer epigenetics, i.e., how chromatin and epigenetic alterations contribute to transcriptional aberrations and genome integrity in cancer.
Oslo University Hospital is a workplace with great diversity. We believe this is absolutely crucial to solving the tasks required of us. We therefore want this diversity to be reflected among the applicants for our positions and encourage everyone to apply regardless of who you are and what background you have.
Tasks/Expectations
The successful candidate will work on one or more well-funded projects and will have the freedom to develop his/her ideas into new projects under the overarching theme of cancer epigenetics with a focus on brain tumors. The projects often involve use and implementation of many complex genomic and chromatin technologies together with quantitative microscopy and flow cytometry methods, and it is expected that the candidate can function in a collaborative manner by taking efficient help from the support network of core facilities and collaborators.Job Qualifications
The applicant should have a master’s degree with a strong background in experimental molecular cell biology (cell culture and standard molecular biology skills) in the field of cancer biology or stem cell biology. Experience and know-how of working on projects involving high throughput sequencing and integrating various multi-omics approach will be a huge plus. Candidates with experiences involving quantitative approaches using microscopy and flow cytometry methods will be prioritized. Applicants with excellent work ethic, ability to multitask, and mentoring skills (ability to supervise and work with master students) will be given preference.Education level
Master’s degree in eukaryotic molecular cell biology.
Experimental skills
Experience and know-how of cell biology and biochemical approaches and exposure to the high throughput sequencing based approaches will be a strong plus. Whereas prior knowledge of these approaches is hugely advantageous, it is not a strict requirement, what we seek is the drive to learn and implement new combination of experimental and computational approaches in cancer epigenetics.
Background on the project description
The main goal of our research is to advance the understanding of molecular mechanisms contributing to cancer and to identify and characterize novel dependencies which can be used to target cancer in patients. For a cancer model, we focus on tumors of central nervous systems which are some of the worst malignancies that afflict mankind. We use clinically relevant mouse in vivo and in vitro GBM models to study gliomagenesis and validate our findings in the primary human glioma neural stem (GNS) cells derived from GBM patients. The mouse and human GBM cellular models are derived from neural stem cells and the characterization of genes required for their proliferation is a major focus of our research.Aside from standard molecular biochemistry approached, we apply RNAi and CRISPR/Cas9 technology to carry out loss-of-function experiments and to edit endogenous loci in the genome. Furthermore, we use a variety of high-throughput sequencing to study gene regulation including RNA-seq/SLAM-seq, ChIP-seq, CUT&RUN/TAG. Exposure to these technologies will be a strong plus, but these are already implemented in the group and a driven and committed candidate can easily adapt to them quickly.
