Flight Safety Engineer
Andøya Spaceport officially opened in November 2023 and is on track to becoming Europe’s first mainland launch site for small satellite launch vehicles (SSLVs). The first of four launch pads is currently in operation and will host the maiden test flight of Isar Aerospace’s Spectrum launch vehicle.
To prepare for the next phase of development of the Spaceport, we are now looking for a Flight Safety Engineer who can strengthen our team within the Safety Department. Our Safety Department plays a key role in all activities performed at Andøya Spaceport by ensuring that all ground and launch operations are conducted at an acceptable risk to people, property, and the environment.
As a member of the Flight Safety team, you will provide expert advice on in-flight safety, safety systems, and the risks associated with flight-related hazards. This means you will conduct and assess technical analyses and reports, perform simulations and analyse data, and support our customers, systems team, and operations personnel on flight safety issues. In addition, you will participate in the ongoing development to expand our flight safety and licensing support services portfolio.
For this position, we are seeking candidates with experience in systems or safety engineering from a relevant industry. Experience with satellite, launch vehicle, or launch/missile range safety systems will be considered highly beneficial.
The main headquarters of Andøya Space and Andøya Spaceport are located at Andøya, and we also have offices in Tromsø and Lysaker. The prospective Flight Safety Engineer will be located at our Lysaker office.
Working tasks/responsibilities
- Conduct technical analyses of flight-related hazards.
- Assess internal and customer technical analyses and reports of ground-based and onboard safety systems.
- Provide expert advice on flight safety issues to our customers, systems team, and operations personnel.
- Perform simulations to quantitatively assess the risk from flight-related hazards and contribute to developing the necessary simulation tools.
- Prepare safety plans and procedures.
- Provide licensing support on regulatory compliance for our customers and concerning our Launch Site Operator license.
- Contribute to developing our future flight safety service portfolio and flight safety-related R&D projects.
- Support and maintain a good and just safety culture.
Qualifications – education
- Experienced in systems or safety engineering from a relevant industry, e.g. with satellites, launch vehicles, tracking systems or launch/missile ranges.
- Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline, e.g., engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer science.
- xperience with programming in Fortran, C++, Python, and/or MATLAB will be considered beneficial.
- Experience with physics modelling software such as OpenFOAM, Ansys STK, ASTOS, or DRAMA will be considered beneficial.
- Fluent in written and oral English
