Breeding program geneticist
Position
- Reports hierarchically to the Director of Genetics, Norsvin.
- Works within the Norsvin breeding department and the Genetic Nucleus Group in Topigs Norsvin, consisting of approximately 16 persons.
- Collaborates intensively with other Norsvin and Topigs Norsvin departments: Research, IT, customer and information services, global technical support, and international daughter companies.
- Functionally a part of Topigs Norsvin Breeding value estimation team 0.8 FTE.
Key deliveries
- Support the design, optimization, and calculation of marginal economic values for traits.
- Implementation and control (monitoring) of the breeding program to realize optimal genetic progress and improve the competitiveness of the genetic product portfolio.
- Optimize statistical models for traits and contribute to statistical/genetic discussions.
- Contribute to routine Breeding Value Estimation, herein testing updates of the breeding value estimation routines and communication.
- Participate in coordinating and controlling the breeding activities on the assigned (GN) farms so that the planned breeding goals are realized as efficiently and effectively as possible.
- Presenting to third parties, particularly about the Topigs Norsvin breeding program and its new developments.
- Act as an information resource for regional Breeding Coordinators and Breeding Technicians.
- Support research projects under the responsibility of the Research department.
Profile and skills
- MSc or PhD degree (Animal Science / Breeding and Genetics/Statistics/Bioinformatics).
- Skills in running genetic analyses (e.g. ASREML, MiXBLUP or equivalents)
- Skills in programming languages like SQL, R, and Python.
- Thorough knowledge and interest in breeding and/or pig husbandry.
- Excellent oral and written fluency in English and Norwegian (or willing to learn Norwegian).
- Excellent communication, organization, and teamwork skills.
- Proactive, pragmatic, focused, has a hands-on mentality, is no-nonsense, has a strong drive for process optimization, knows how to engage others enthusiastically, and has a sense of commercial interest.
- Willingness to travel internationally, including an initial training period in Topigs Norsvin headquarters.
- Personal suitability will be emphasized.
