Gearbulk is an international shipping group providing high quality transportation services for various industrial sectors. Founded in 1968 by Kristian Gerhard Jebsen in Bergen, Norway, the company is 72% owned by Mitsui OSK Lines, and as from January 2025 28% owned by Marubeni Corporation, both based in Japan. In 2017 Gearbulk and Grieg Star established the joint venture G2 Ocean with headquarters in Bergen, Norway. The group operates the world’s largest fleet of open hatch vessels, specifically designed and equipped to transport unitized cargoes such as forest products, steels and non-ferrous metals and project cargo. Gearbulk is also involved in terminal operations.
Role Overview:

We’re looking for a Project Engineer to play a key role in advancing decarbonization initiatives and fleet performance optimization. In this role, you’ll drive projects that enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and support our commitment to a greener future. Key Responsibilities:
- Drive decarbonization projects by researching, implementing, and monitoring initiatives that reduce emissions and improve fleet efficiency
- Collaborate with internal teams and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless project execution
- Monitor and analyze fleet performance data to drive operational improvements
- Assist in the development and implementation of ESG and sustainability reporting
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with industry regulations and environmental targets
- Stay updated on emerging technologies and trends in the maritime industry to recommend innovative solutions
Qualifications:
- Degree in Engineering (Marine, Mechanical, or Naval Architecture)
- Minimum 3-5 years of relevant work experience in shipping, shipbuilding, or vessel improvement projects
- Knowledge of maritime regulations, classification standards, and safety protocols
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively
- Strong analytical skills and familiarity with reporting
- Outstanding communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work across diverse teams and cultures
- Strong IT skills. Experience with and fleet performance systems is preferrable
- Experience working within a structured project methodology is preferable
