About the position
Summary: CICERO is expanding our research on the evolution of the climate system, from global to regional scales, taking into account the full range of human induced and natural physical processes. We are seeking an early-to-mid career researcher for a permanent position in atmospheric science, to work on global and regional climate modelling, aerosols and internal variability, and topics at their interface, such as wildfire, polar processes and extreme weather events. CICERO is at the forefront of several aspects of atmospheric and climate system research, with links to land and ocean processes. We also work to strengthen the connections between natural science knowledge about physical changes, and actual climate change related impacts on nature and society.
Background. Climate change is evolving at an ever-increasing pace, driven by a range of human influences such as greenhouse gas and aerosol emissions and land use change, in combination with natural feedbacks and modes of internal variability. These processes all interact, to drive complex changes of climate and weather conditions at regional scales around the world. The Climate System group at CICERO works to bridge this gap, by using modelling tools and analysis techniques that let us trace the
influence of multiple, interacting causal factors. Examples of topics at the interface between global and regional evolution include the regional effects of air pollutants and other short lived climate forcers on the atmosphere and climate, including specific phenomena such as the Indian monsoon, the evolution of fire occurrence and intensity in a warming climate, and the processes driving the evolution of Arctic climate and ecosystem changes. We have traditionally worked with in-house global climate and atmospheric models (CESM, NorESM, OsloCTM3), multi-model comparisons (RAMIP, PDRMIP, AeroCom), observations (satellites, aircraft monitoring, ground station data), sector level emissions (energy, shipping, aviation), and large ensembles of climate model information at their interface. New generations of models, combined with emerging machine learning techniques, are opening new opportunities for process studies, which we are keen to take advantage of.
Tasks
This position will focus on the use, and generation, of global and regional climate model information, traditional and machine learning based analysis methods, and process studies linking global to regional evolution. The successful applicant will initially work across a range of research projects with topics including wildfire in the boreal regions, dust and other atmospheric aerosol emissions in a warmer world, climate impacts in Sub-Saharan Africa, and the influence of modes of variability on decadal scale climate evolution. The successful applicant will work in the Climate System research group at CICERO, and be part of several international researcher networks.
Skills required
The successful applicant will have a solid technical skillset in atmospheric science, climate modeling and analysis. Experience with variable resolution modelling and/or downscaling is an advantage, as is knowledge of recent machine learning techniques. CICERO is involved in many concurrent research projects, so a documented ability to contribute across multiple topics is an advantage. We expect the applicant to contribute to analysis, paper writing and the development of future research proposals.
Qualifications
- PhD or similar level of competence in relevant area (e.g. atmospheric processes, climate evolution, machine learning with an Earth sciences focus) is required.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills are required.
- Experience with global or regional climate models is required.
- Strong and flexible programming skills (Python, or similar) are required.
- Experience of working with GitHub would be advantageous.
- The ability to speak and write confidently in academic English is required.
- Working knowledge of Norwegian or other Scandinavian languages would be advantageous, but not a requirement.
- The ability to work both collaboratively and independently is required.
- Interest in effectively communicating in the public sphere is advantageous.
