Kunsthall Stavanger - Director
Kunsthall Stavanger seeks a new Director
Kunsthall Stavanger was established in 2013 and has developed into a leading institution for contemporary art locally, nationally, and internationally. The institution creates engaging experiences for the public with both Norwegian and international artists, and has a diverse program that includes exhibitions, popular activities for children and youth, and various artistic collaborations.
The Board seeks a visible and visionary Director to lead the institution into its next chapter. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated leadership experience in the visual arts sector, a strong curatorial track record, and a nuanced understanding of the contemporary art field. We are looking for a candidate who excels in institutional development, strategic planning, and financial management, with a deep commitment to supporting artists, fostering critical artistic discourse, and guiding a small and dedicated team towards the implementation of the Kunsthall’s program. A strong international network and experience in fundraising and grant applications are considered key assets.
The Director will act as the institution’s key representative, building and sustaining relationships with artists, curators, galleries, funding bodies, and cultural institutions both in Norway and internationally. This position requires an individual who is both an inspiring leader and a compelling public advocate for contemporary art.
Housed in a historic 1920s building, Kunsthall Stavanger is at a moment of transition and growth. The incoming Director will be expected to explore innovative possibilities for the future development of the institution’s physical space, ensuring its continued relevance as a site for artistic production and engagement.
While English is the working language, proficiency in a Scandinavian language is highly advantageous.
The director reports to the board. The position is a fixed-term contract for five years starting from January 1, 2026, with the possibility of extension. The workplace is centrally located in Stavanger.
We know that diversity leads to better outcomes, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
