PhD Research Fellowship in Computational Narrative Systems at the Center for Digital Narrative
The Department of Linguistics, Literary and Aesthetic Study invites applications for a PhD position in Computational Narrative Systems at the Center for Digital Narrative, commencing 01.09.2025, or as agreed upon. The appointment is for a fixed-term period of three (3) years.
About the Center for Digital Narrative
The position will be associated with the Center for Digital Narrative (CDN) (https://www.uib.no/en/cdn), a Norwegian Center for Research Excellence. The Center focuses on algorithmic narrativity, new environments and materialities, and the shifting cultural contexts in which digital narratives are received and processed. We investigate the ways that the interactions of human authors and non-human agents result in new narrative forms, how the materialities of digital narratives have changed over time, and how cultural contexts are reshaping their materiality, use and function.
The Center for Digital Narrative is a dynamic research environment housed in a dedicated facility in the heart of the University of Bergen campus. The activities of the Center include research group meetings, interactions with international research leaders in digital narrative, researcher training, PhD summer schools, frequent symposia and exhibitions.
About the PhD project and work tasks
The successful candidate's PhD project will investigate narrative through computational models, for instance, those based on processes of storytelling, creative writing, cognitive science, narrative theory, and/or theories of creativity.
The successful candidate will conduct collaborative as well as their individual research within the Center for Digital Narrative's Computational Narrative Systems node, led by Professor Nick Montfort with Professor Rafael Pérez y Pérez. Work includes developing new computational models of narrative and re-implementing historical models (also known as “storytelling systems") so that they can be easily studied and used.
The PhD fellow will participate in Center for Digital Narrative events, including PhD research schools, workshops and seminars.
