General information about the position

The Natural History Museum (NHM), University of Oslo, is recruiting an Associate Professor (SKO 1011) within the field of mineralogy. The position will be in the Department of Research and Collections, which has the curatorial responsibility for minerals, gems, rocks and meteorites.

The ideal candidate is interested in the fundamental properties of minerals and utilises this knowledge to explore larger geological processes. It is expected that the successful candidate can achieve their research goals by combining traditional methodology with novel analytical approaches and secure funding. The research should use and contribute to the geological collections housed at NHM.

NHM has a collaboration agreement with the Department of Geosciences on teaching and supervision of students at the bachelor and master’s levels, and with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences for supervision of doctoral candidates. The successful candidate is expected to participate in teaching at all levels and be a capable and enthusiastic supervisor of master’s and PhD students. Up to 50% of the working time will be devoted to curating collections (main activity), teaching and supervision of students, outreach and administrative tasks at NHM. Lectures and tuition are given in Norwegian and English. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to contribute to method development of the research infrastructure housed at NHM, especially the single-crystal diffractometer and the new SEM. The successful applicant is expected to become an active member of the Natural History Museum.


Qualification requirements

Required qualifications:

  • A PhD in mineralogy
  • Research program in colletion-based research
  • A recent publication record and an upward trajectory of research within the topic of the position
  • Excellent English language skills (written and spoken)

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document sufficient teaching qualifications (minimum formal requirement is a 200 hrs pedagogical programme) will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be required to learn sufficient Norwegian within a two-year period, to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Experience with crystal structure refinement from single-crystal X-ray data
  • Explored the use of spectroscopic methods to solve mineralogical questions
  • Knowledge of large-scale research infrastructure experiments
  • Experience in working with mineralogical/geological collections, ideally as a curator
  • Organised or participated in extended fieldwork
  • Experience in science-based public outreach
  • Track record of securing funding

Personal qualities
  • Ability to create and contribute to a well-functioning, inclusive and productive research environment
  • Networking skills, ability to collaborate and conduct scientific leadership
  • Ability to cooperate and communicate well with other members of staff
