The position

A Research position within marine governance is available at the Norwegian College of Fishery Science (NCFS). The position is affiliated with the research group BRIDGE. The position has funding for three years, with the possibility of an extended funding period.

The workplace is at UiT in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.

NCFS is a part of The Faculty of Biosciences, Fisheries and Economics (BFE) and undertakes research and research-based teaching of high national and international quality in an interdisciplinary environment. Research at the Norwegian University of Fisheries takes place in close collaboration with the faculty and university research environments, as well as national and international partners. Research activity is provisionally organized into the groups of: Living Marine Resources, Sea Food Science, Fish Immunology and Vaccinology, Aquaculture, Genetics, Marine Drug Discovery, Resource Management, Marine Management and Resource Economics.


The position’s field of research

The successful candidate will become a member of a team that will primarily work with the Horizon Europe project: “Improving Performance of EU Marine Governance (PERMAGOV).

PERMAGOV contributes to the realization of the EU’s Green Deal objectives by improving the implementation and performance of marine policies in the EU. The project develops a framework for assessing policy performance, and enhances understanding of how institutional barriers, formal and informal collaborations and e-governance tools enable and constrain the implementation of EUs marine policies.

The candidate will lead (or co-lead) a case study on the development of offshore wind energy in Norway. Another important task is to facilitate cooperation with key project stakeholders to identify problems and solutions in relation to implementing the EU’s Green Deal.

The candidate will also contribute to the work in other projects at NCFS within the field of marine governance.


Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • A Norwegian doctoral degree in sociology, political science, geography, environmental science/management, marine science/management, sustainability studies, or another field with clear relevance for the work areas described above. Or a corresponding foreign doctoral degree recognised as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree, or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality. A PhD degree is required before commencement in the position. If you are near completion of your PhD degree, you may still apply.
  • Strong scientific writing skills.
  • Strong qualitative research skills (e.g. including semi-structured interviews and the use of focus groups).
  • Personal qualifications giving excellent interpersonal skills. Important aspects of this include the ability to, and the interest in, working as a member of a research team, in addition to good communication and presentation skills.
  • Documented fluency of English language (learn more).

Additional desirable qualifications:

  • PhD thesis with specialization within or with relevance for marine governance, especially relating to the indicated research areas
  • Experience with, and motivation for, working with stakeholders.
  • Experience with research funding.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively in a research team.
  • Knowledge of relevant governance frameworks in Europe and in Norway, i.e. relating to marine governance, renewable energy, and the Green Deal.
  • Experience with N-Vivo or other software supporting qualitative and semi-qualitative research.
  • Competence in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language (learn more).

The applicants will be assessed by an expert committee. The committee's mandate is to undertake an assessment of the applicants' qualifications on the basis of the written material presented by the applicants, and the detailed description draw up for the position. The application must include:

The remuneration for the research position is in accordance with the State salary code 1108 (without PhD) or 1109 (with PhD). A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. UiT pays directly to the pension fund on top of the salary - in 2023 this rate is 9 %. As an employee you will become member of the National Insurance Scheme which also include health care services.

The allocation of working hours is flexible and allocated on a case-by-case basis. In a research position you will spend most of the time on research and development work. As a norm, the time resources spent on administrative duties constitutes 5 % for academic staff.
