PhD in population dynamics of bilberry

Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA), Nord University, Norway, invites applications from outstanding candidates for a three-year PhD position in population dynamics of bilberry.

Vaccinium (bilberry) is a keystone species of the boreal forest ecosystem and an important food source for wildlife. Bilberry relies on unpredictable events to germinate. Seedlings establish for example in cadaver decomposition islands following dispersal by omnivorous scavengers such as crows and foxes, but also on tree stumps following forest clearance. This project explores the population-level effects of these rare events – under what circumstances do seedlings survive to adulthood, and how does this affect local population genetic structure and resilience?

The successful candidate will be part of the Ecology research division at FBA.

The position is to be located in Steinkjer, Central Norway and you are expected to live in Steinkjer during the contract, per Nord University’s requirement for residency at the institution

Qualification requirements

• Applicants from outside the EU/EEA must submit NOKUT approval of their master’s degree

• It is assumed that the person who is hired is admitted to the faculty’s doctoral program Final project outline with plan for the doctoral work must be approved and agreed upon no later than 3 months after accession. Termination may be considered if admission to the doctoral program is not available within this deadline, due to lack of annual reporting of progress and/or serious failure in progress and in duty work. Essential:

• Holds a master’s degree in biology or closely related subject at the time of appointment, with a grade average of B or better (or equivalent score) both for the masters degree programme in total and for the thesis.
• Has practical laboratory experience in genetic or molecular analyses.
• Has good oral and written English skills.
• Has worked in the analysis package R.

Advantageous:

• Enjoys fieldwork
• Has a driving licence valid in Norway (e.g. EU licence)
• Speaks a Scandinavian language
• Has worked with Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms

Candidates who already have a PhD degree will not be considered for the position.

• Theme and perspectives from the applicant’s master’s study. Project outline with description of project idea and plan for implementation
• The applicant’s description of motivation for the doctoral work and opportunities for completion
• Relevant experience from research work
• Ability to work independently, goal-oriented and systematically
• Personal suitability

The annual salary for doctoral researchers (code 1017) is set at wage level 54, NOK 532 200,- in the Norwegian State Salary Scale.
