The Department of Sport and Social Sciences

The Department of Sport and Social Sciences is a broadly focused academic group that conducts research, development, and teaching in several subjects: The Sociology of Sport, Sport Philosophy, History of Sport, Sport Psychology, Coaching, Sport Management and Sport for Development. We have a well-equipped laboratory for team/ball sport analysis and a modern sport psychology laboratory. Our staff puts much emphasis on the interplay between the teaching, research, and practical application.


About the Position

There is a vacancy for a permanent position as Professor / Associate Professor in Sport Management at the Department of Sport and Social Sciences (IIS). IIS consists of a broadly focused academic professional group that conducts research, development work and teaching ball games, sports psychology, philosophy, history, sociology, the coaching role, sports management and sports, culture and development cooperation.

The sport management group at NIH is highly recognized internationally and a leading research group in Scandinavia. The group’s expertise includes organization, leadership, governance, and marketing. The researchers in the group are collaborators in international research projects and are in close contact with organizations in the sport sector.


Requirements for Competence and Professional Skills

For the position of Professor / Associate professor, a PhD in sports management or a related relevant field is required.

We are looking for a colleague who has research and teaching capabilities in the areas where we already have strong expertise, and who also has internationally recognized research in associated areas within sport management. The ideal candidate will have a research focus on sport management. This should preferably include research related to, but not limited to, areas such as sport organization, leadership, sport marketing, sport economics, sport law, sustainability, CSR, innovation, entrepreneurship, or digital transformation.

We are looking for an ambitious Professor / Associate Professor who has an active, international network. Experience with applying for, and obtaining, external funding for research projects is considered an advantage.

Experience in conducting study program development and administration of studies at all levels (BA, MA, PhD), including on digital platforms, is desirable. Documented strong qualifications within quantitative and/or qualitative methods are required.

The person hired is expected to participate in teaching and supervision at the bachelor-, master- and PhD-level and must be able to document teaching and supervision experience in sport management.

The person hired must have a good command of Norwegian/Scandinavian language orally and in writing (or be willing to acquire such proficiency within 2 years after appointment) and have strong oral and written English skills.

Formal university pedagogical competence is required for applicants for the position of Professor. Applicants for the position of Associate Professor without formal university pedagogical competence are given the opportunity to complete a course within two years of joining.

It is expected that the employee has a significant presence on Campus (NIH).


Selection Criteria

When ranking competent applicants, emphasis will be placed on:

  • Quality, relevance, and scope of scientific works. Particular emphasis is placed on recent research in sports management.
  • Quality, relevance and scope of practical teaching, and supervision experience in sports management.
  • Experience with leadership and administration of sports management studies or equivalent.
  • Degree of complementarity in relation to the sports management academic community.
  • Documented ability to obtain external funding for research projects.
  • National and international network within the sports management community.
  • Other documented qualifications that are relevant to the position, such as ability to conduct popular science and public dissemination.
  • Personal suitability and good collaboration skills.

Relevant candidates will be invited for an interview with a subsequent trial lecture. The candidate who, overall and according to the competence level (Professor / Associate Professor) applied for, best meets the selection criteria, will be offered the position.


The Application

Applicants will be evaluated by an expert committee. Short-listed applicants will be called for interview(s) and a trial lecture. The electronic application is to be written in English and must contain:

  • Cover letter, including the candidate’s motivation for the position as well as a description of current and planned research, focusing on the research areas mentioned in the announcement text
  • Complete CV summarizing education, positions held, teaching and research experience, administrative experience and other qualifying activities
  • A complete list of scientific publications. The list should include up to 10 publications (.pdf files to be submitted) that the applicant believes to be most important, along with a statement indicating their relevance to the announced position.
  • Documentation of other activities which the applicant considers relevant to the position and wants to be considered in the assessment
  • Copies of diplomas, transcripts and certificates
  • References (list of 2-3 people with name, title, email, and phone number)

Applicants for the position of Professor must in addition submit:

  • Teaching portfolio (3-6 pages, including documentation of formal university pedagogical competence and a reflection note about the candidate’s own pedagogical practice and view of learning anchored in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) criteria (focus on student learning, development over time, a research-based approach, and a collegial attitude and practice)
  • Overview of experience in PhD supervision (name of the candidate, supervision period, institution, date of defense, supervision role (main/co-supervisor) for each candidate)
