A permanent full-time position as an associate professor within the field of simulation- and data-driven product design for intelligent manufacturing is available at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Science. We are searching for an expert with a desire to work across disciplines to conduct high-quality research and develop innovative solutions within the field of integrated product- and process design and development. You will be part of a strong research team within advanced manufacturing processes, and we can offer a wide variety of advanced, well-equipped laboratories covering the entire value chain of materials, manufacturing process and product development and distribution. By working at our department, you will have the full flexibility to distribute your work priorities between research, education and innovation. Our study programs attract some of the most competent and motivated students in Norway. Duties of the position
As a member of the Manufacturing research group, you will:
- develop new methods and technologies for integrating product design and manufacturing processes, i.e.: Additive Manufacturing (AM), metal forming, extrusion, welding, joining, hybrid, etc., and for extracting process data to model and realize adaptive process control and improved product quality
- explore and develop integrated approaches for simulation- and data-driven design of manufacturing processes and products, including smart manufacturing and Industry 5.0
- initiate new research projects through active marketing and sales to the industry and the funding bodies (e.g. EU and The Research Council of Norway)
- over time develop a research portfolio with significant output in terms of funding, PhD candidates and publications
- teach and supervise bachelor-, master students and PhD candidates in the mechanical engineering study programs offered at the department, particularly in the aerospace engineering program and a develop a graduate course on simulation-and data-driven product design
- create synergies between research and teaching by bringing elements from the former into the latter including supervision of students
- exam preparation, conduct evaluation, and perform administrative tasks as required
Required qualifications
You must have the qualifications required for the position of Associate Professor in the field of product- and manufacturing-process design, as outlined in the regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts
- your PhD, or comparable academic work, must be within the field of mechanical engineering with primary focus on manufacturing, product development, materials or a comparable relevant, including structural engineering, physics or material’s design and engineering
- you must have documented knowledge and research experience within manufacturing and product development research
- you must have recent publications (from the last 3 years) in international scientific journals of high relevance to the field of this position
- you must have documented experience in writing successful research proposals/applications that have resulted in funding
- you must have experience in teaching engineering courses at university level and supervising graduate (MSc) students
- you need to have international experience from universities in minimum 2 different countries
- you must be fluent in Norwegian (or a Scandinavian) language for teaching BSc courses
- you must meet the requirements for receiving security authorization needed for teaching in our aerospace engineering program
You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.
Preferred qualifications
- experience with developing products and technology
- knowledge of sensors and their integration into the manufacturing/use-phase/EOL system
- experience in FEA analysis and topology optimization (e.g related to AM)
- experience with inline and real-time adaptive processing and process control
- competence within Industry 5.0
- experience from related fields such as product design, materials manufacturing systems
- track record of multidisciplinary work that has led to scientific publications,
- contributing to patents, start-ups or innovations
- industrial experience
- high-level publications as first or last author (PI) published independently of your PhD supervisor(s) or postdoctoral mentor(s)

Salary and conditions
As a Associate Professor (code 1011) you are normally paid from gross NOK 650 000 – NOK 900 000 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU.
After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

- A description of the scientific/artistic works you consider most relevant, which you particularly wish to be factored into the assessment

You are encouraged to use the Universities Norway’s NOR-CAM toolbox as a guide for documentation of your competence.
Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.
In the evaluation of which candidate is best qualified, emphasis will be placed on education, experience and personal and interpersonal qualities. Motivation, ambitions, and potential will also count in the assessment of the candidates. Our assessment of the pedagogical skills will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration, and an open scientific practice will be recognized.
NTNU is obliged by the evaluation criteria for research quality in accordance with The San Fransisco Declaration on Research Assessment – DORA and The obligations in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment ( CoARA) on responsible assessment of research and recognition of a wider range of academic contributions to science and society. This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date. We will also pay attention to research leadership and participation in research projects. Your scientific work from the last five years will be given the most weight.
