Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande, first published in 1937, was based on anthropological researches carried out in the Southern Sudan during the late1920s. For a decade or so the book had little discernible impact, but from the early 1950s to the present day its influence has grown incalcubly, so it is now difficult even to discuss beliefs about witchcraft or sorcery without reference to it. Its theoretical insights have also proved fruitful in a number of fields outside anthropology.

This acknowledged masterpiece has been abridged to make it more accessible to students. In her introduction, Eva Gillies presents the case for the relevance of the book to modern anthropologists.
