J. Martins tidlige arbeide var enkle folketonepregede melodier med gitar og vokal. I 1970 begynte han å inkorporere jazz-preget i sin musikk. Solid Air og Inside Out (begge 1973) var nesten helt jazzede, fylt med improvisert vokal og instrumentalt preg.
