About the Lithograph: Warhol made his first Mao silkscreen paintings in March 1972, weeks after Nixon’s return to the United States. Between 1972 to 1973, he executed 199 paintings in 5 set sizes and 10 colored screen prints in editions of 250 along with 50 artist proofs.

About Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was a Czech-American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising that flourished by the 1960s, creating multiple portraits of celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Jacqueline Kennedy.

Andy Warhol remains an art market darling, with a steady demand for collectors. Just in 2010, 1,646 Warhol pieces were sold at auction. At Christie's New York on November 2006 a record was set for a 1972 Warhol Mao painting; it sold for $17.4 million 5.
