Bit of Knowledge: All Myler mouthpieces with Western style cheekpieces, combination bits, and cradle bits are made of sweet iron with copper inlay. Sweet iron oxidizes when exposed to moisture, releasing a sweet taste into the horse's mouth. Note: Sweet iron changes color to grey as it oxidizes, but it does not actually flake, pit or corrode as the word "rust" would imply (which is why we prefer the term "oxidize"). Sweet iron has been the metal of choice for nearly all Western bits going back to the Spanish tradition of bitsmithing; many antique bits are sweet iron. Sweet iron is not as widely known in the English world, so our English bits have stainless steel mouthpieces.
