As its name suggests, ‘Bone China’ refers to items that are made with bone ash. Bone ash most typically comes from cow bones that have been ground into very fine ash before being mixed with feldspar, ball clay, quartz, and kaolin clay.

The quality of the finished bone china product is based on how much bone ash is in the mixture; high-quality bone china should contain at least 30 percent. Heath McCabe ‘Fine bone china’ mugs are made with 43% bone ash giving the mugs strength and allowing them to be processed as a lighter and thinner product.
