The candle holder in pewter with a green stone (an amethyst), was designed by Josef Frank in 1952. When designing the candle holder, he had Estrid Ericson's thoughts about the light at the dining table in mind. During a radio interview in 1950, she commented that candle holders should be high, shining from above rather than below, so not to cast an unflattering light on the dinner guests.

Pewter is a silvery-white metallic element that is extracted primarily from the mineral tinstone or cassiterite. It is one of the few metals that have been in use since prehistoric times. Pewter has a lower melting point than other metals, which means that candles should never be left to burn down completely. This can cause the pewter to melt and lose its shape, which cannot be restored. As a precaution, blow out the candles when there is still 4-5 cm left.
