Children of Bodom: Halo of Blood

Som vanlig leverer finnene i Children of Bodom en råbra prestasjon også på sitt åttende album "Halo of Blood". Ingen kompromisser, ingen fanger tatt! De fleste låtene overmanner lytteren med sin blanding av fart og melodi!

Children of Bodom var et finskmelodisk death metal band som ble stiftet i 1993 og tok navnet sitt fra innsjøen Bodom i Esbo, Finland hvor tre ungdommer ble knivdrept på en campingtur i 1960. Den siste personen overlevde angrepet og hevdet han så den personifiserte «Døden». «Døden» har blitt Children of Bodoms maskot og er inkludert på alle bandets albumomslag, og blir spøkefullt kalt for Roy, etter frasen i Hot Shots:Roy, ROY! That guy's been ignoring me all day!

Da Children of Bodom ble stiftet av Alexi Laiho og Jaska Raatikainen kalte de seg IneartheD, men skiftet navn til Children of Bodom samme år fordi de måtte skifte navnet for å signere med SpineFarm Records, etter å ha gitt ut deres 3 eneste demoer. Children of Bodom blir ofte forkortet til CoB.

Laiho var bandets frontfigur, og ble ofte nevnt som en av de beste gitaristene i sin sjanger. Mange vil også hevde at han er av en de beste uansett sjanger. Flesteparten av sangene til bandet har som regel en heftig gitar- og keyboardsolo. Etter at bandet ga ut Something Wild prøvde Laiho å begå selvmord med sovepiller.Han lå en uke i koma.

Tre måneder etter det oppfølgingsalbumet Hatebreeder, kom konsertalbumet Tokyo Warhearts i butikkene. Mange vil hevde at dette er et av de beste konsertalbumene i sin sjanger.

Follow the Reaper er navnet på det tredje albumet, som kom ut i oktober i 2000. Albumet inneholder låter som «Everytime I Die», «Hate Me!», «Kissing the Shadows» og «Mask of Sanity». Tre coverlåter ble også utgitt i forskjellige utgaver. Låtenes opphavsmenn er Ozzy Osbourne, WASP og Scorpions.

Hate Crew Deathroll er betraktet som det beste albumet av gjengen fra Esbo.

Mange av låtene kan lett komme på en eventuell «Best Of»-cd. Dette var det siste albumet der Alexander Kuoppala var rytmegitarist.

Roope Latvala kom inn og ble med på turneen til det femte albumet. Are You Dead Yet? ble debuten til Latvala i bandet. Skiven kom ut i 2005. Vi merker sjangerskiftet veldig godt på dette albumet – skiftet fra å være «melodisk» til å være «trashy». Et album der «We're Not Gonna Fall», «In Your Face», tittellåten og «Trashed, Lost & Strungout» er de største godbitene. Skiven kom på Billboard-lista i USA..

Blooddrunk var det sjette albumet fra bandet. Det ble utgitt 9. april 2008. «Banned From Heaven», «Tie My Rope» og tittellåten «Blooddrunk» er tre låter som blir sett på som de beste fra dette albumet. Stilen på albumet var mer preget av thrash metal enn de foregående.

Høsten 2010 ble brukt til å spille inn det sjuende og siste albumet fra bandet, Relentless Reckless Forever. Albumet ble utgitt 8. mars 2011, og følges opp med turneen «The ugly world tour 2011» der bandet også kom til Norge. I slutten av mai 2015 forlot Roope Latvala bandet.

It is the eighth studio album by the Finnish band Children of Bodom. Unfortunately, I am approaching the end of the discography of my favorite band. I try not to speedrun so that I still have some secrets to discover. So this review may be a little different than others, as I haven't listened to Blooddrunk or Relentless, Reckless, Forever, which were a decline in form for most listeners. And today the album is discussed as a return to this form. Therefore, the opinion will be from the perspective of a listener who did not witness the alleged decline in form. The first thing that attracts attention in this album is, of course, the cover, as usual for CoB, it is beautiful, dark and mysterious. Of course, it shows Reaper walking on the frozen Lake Bodom with people trapped under the ice.

Moving on to listening. Songs such as "Waste of Skin", "Scream for Silence" and "Damage Beyond Repair" are songs with a classic CoB pattern that worked well on the first 5 albums. There are keyboards, melodic solos, choirs in the chorus, everything is in its place as if nothing happened. However, the title track "Halo of Blood" has a black metal sound, especially in the intro. There is one more interesting composition, different from the rest. We're talking about "Dead Man's Hand on You", the beginning sounds like it's Type O Negative or another gothic metal band, it doesn't sound like CoB at all. I really like this, trying to do something different and fresh. Of course, a good pattern is not bad, but the songs "similar" to the first 5 albums are no longer so gripping, exciting or heartwarming. I'm talking specifically about "Bodom Blue Moon" and "Your Days Are Numbered". These songs are simply boring (in my opinion), they have nothing interesting to offer, and even if they did find something, you can listen to better equivalents, such as "Bodom Beach Terror". Some of the really good songs that stick to the formula include "Scream for Silence", "Waste of Skin", "All Twisted". You can just feel the good old Children of Bodom in these songs. Alexi’s shredding is peak performance as always, his voice got kinda weaker but it’s still good. Another thing that bothers me a bit about this album is the fact that the bass is practically inaudible. The drums are just okay, nothing bad but nothing great either. The keyboards and rhythm guitar are at a high level as always. The album classically ends with a cover or even two. For me, CoB are the masters of making covers. They are able to combine their sound with the original in such a way that it sounds like their song, but the soul of the original is still present.
