It is a truly beautiful village, steeped in history and heritage and also ideally located for enjoying all the region has to offer. It is also remarkably easy to access from the UK, being just a short train or ferry ride away, making it perfect for weekend breaks. The lovely Opal Coast beaches are close, as are the historic battlefields that mark out the history of the Pas-de-Calais. Auxi le Château is so pretty and atmospheric that it is often described as looking like a film set. The typically Norman style houses, half-timbered and quaint, climb the hill on which the village is built, leading you through its tranquil, ancient streets and past various historic monuments. Of these, the most significant is the Church of Saint Martin, a 15th century Gothic building displaying many interesting features. Others worth noting include the remains of the castle, a Neo Gothic town hall currently under renovation, grand houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and various watermills. The town stands on the River Authie. Besides the heritage, Auxi le Château has plenty of good shops and also restaurants where you can enjoy trying out the local cuisine. All the usual necessities such as banks and medical services are found in the town. Saturday is market day, so this is the time to forgo that lie in and get down town to take your pick of the freshest and best of local produce in the traditional manner. Speaking of traditions, various fetes and festivals are held in Auxi le Château throughout the year, and there is no better way to absorb the culture and get to know the locals than to join in the festivities. In such a deeply historic area there is never going to be a shortage of interesting things to do and see. Indeed, should you just be visiting rather than looking to live in Auxi le Château, you will find yourself having to decide what to miss out rather than what to do. Taking a battlefields tour is one of the most popular of the local activities, and visits to the numerous war museums is also fascinating, if a sombre reminder of the horrors of war. On a lighter note, the lovely beaches and resorts of the Opal Coast are close enough for summer seaside days out, and the gluttonous joys of the local seafood restaurants are there for you to experience! Places to put on your list of towns to see include the market town of Hesdin, Arras, Boulogne sur Mer and the stunning Saint Omer. Meanwhile if being active and sporty is your thing, you have a treat in store in the area too, as the coast offers numerous opportunities to try sports such as sailing, swimming, fishing and sand yachting, while inland you can turn your attentions to walking, horse-riding, cycling and golf. Being so close to England and the port of Calais means that Auxi le Château is very easy to reach. Hope on a ferry or a channel tunnel train, and drive the rest of the way finding the town from the A16 auto route. Alternative ferry ports include Boulogne and Dieppe. If air travel is preferable for you, Paris Beauvais is the place to head for, with Ryanair providing cheap and quick services. Le Touquet also has an airport, with flights operated by LyddAir.
